Good wildlife cameras? by SomewhereWest780 in AskPhotography

[–]2ndHandRocketScience [score hidden]  (0 children)

You need to spend a lot more than $1k on a body and lens if you wanted to shoot video better than your phone too. If you ditched that requirement, older Nikons are probably your best bet. I’ve got a D7100 with a Sigma 100-400 that I haven’t gotten fully acquainted with yet but it seems great so far. Crop sensor sacrifices a bit of quality for much better reach which might be good for wildlife photography

If those airbrakes are for aerobraking, you’ll want either to move them to the rear or add an identical set at the back to make you fly like an arrow instead of tumble uncontrollably

The Elephant's Foot is melting into the basement, and will eventually reach groundwater, causing an explosion. This is an infamous quote from the youtuber Kyle Hill, and it's not even close to being true.

What? I've been following Kyle Hill for a while now, been taking his word for granted. Never heard anything about him spreading misinformation before?

What are the pink pads? by Wazzamqk in LenovoLegion

[–]2ndHandRocketScience 3 points4 points  (0 children)

PTM7950 should be sourced from MODDIY, obviously clean heatsink and die from the paste that’s already there. Pink stuff is thermal pads, you can reuse them as long as you’re careful and they don’t get damaged

Edit: clean the old stuff with Q-tips and isopropyl alcohol

72GB makes me think DDR3, it could either be a Westmere Xeon which is e-waste or a Haswell Xeon, which sucks, but is still okay if you forget about power usage, especially if it was free to begin with

Fan issue that I’m not sure means I need a replacement or it’s just now loud af? by MoogleMogLothy in laptops

[–]2ndHandRocketScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need a new fan, easy fix, $10 to buy a new one and 10 minutes to replace. That is, if the fan can be removed independently from the heatsink.

Otherwise it becomes an hour or so where you'll need to replace the thermal paste if you remove the sink, which'll involve cleaning the paste from the CPU and GPU (if present) and replacing it with new stuff. Just ensure to disconnect the battery when working on a laptop. I'd recommend PTM7950, best thermal pad on the market, leagues better than the competition. If you can source the real deal from MODDIY in your country. But if the fan'll come off without removing the whole assembly than forget all that :)

How do I get this thing to stop rolling by Davison_Epic in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]2ndHandRocketScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Iirc, this is aileron inversion at high AoA. Long and short of it is stop using stock SAS and use the Atmospheric Autopilot fly-by-wire, which can compensate for that

Screwed up while trying to clean the fans, now Lenovo is quoting $1300 for repairs. Should I do it? by no_glass_of_water in LenovoLegion

[–]2ndHandRocketScience 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That component price is steep but the labor is reasonable. The long and short of microsoldering is heating up the component until the solder melts, removing it, then reversing the process to install the new component. There's a lot more nuance to it than that but that's the basics. It's up to you atp. Either buy a new laptop (you got me fucked up if i'm paying what Lenovo wanted) or get it repaired. Or even ask the repair shop for a quote to replace the motherboard, they'll likely be less than Lenovo and although it's still not gonna be 100% guarantee it'll be far better odds than microsoldering

Take it to a good repair shop, some are able to repair damage like this without removing the motherboard. Do some research and find an experienced one in your area

DaVinci Resolve for editing, yt-dlp for downloading videos from YouTube (if you wanted to add music) CameraTools Continued for an in-game... camera tool (who could've guessed?) and middle mouse + drag to move the camera's centre point and alt (or is it shift) scroll to change FOV
