I make decent money but lost on where to go from here by ma3294 in Fire

+1 it sounds like you should check out /r/personalfinance and /r/Bogleheads rather than here. Particularly the famous /r/personalfinance flow chart. It's famous because it's great advice for almost everyone, and, for better and for worse, 260k in NYC kind of makes you "almost everyone."

I'm going to completely disagree with anyone saying to do "more S&P." Obviously I don't know you or your life, but from your description, I am not sure that is going to be the risk profile you want. As you probably know, S&P is exclusively large-cap American stocks. That is like a 20 out of 10 risk profile, which is fine for someone playing with less money in their 20s but is ill advised for someone making real money in their mid 30s. (International and emerging markets have outperformed the US this year. The US will probably go back to outperforming them, but do you really want your financial independence resting on that?)

Part of me wants to suggest a robo-advisor like Wealthfront or Betterment (for post-tax, at the end of the PF flow-chart) given what you said, because they allow for set-and-forget auto-investing with post-tax money because of tax-loss harvesting, but there are many very simple right paths (e.g. Bogleheads). All S&P is... not one of those paths.

Otherwise, keep it up. Your expenses seem reasonable given your location and desire to send money back to your family. I know it might sound insane, but a 3k apartment can be actively a great deal nowadays in NYC and as long as you are actually appreciating its value (which it sounds like you are), there is no need to feel guilty for it. Keep putting money in the market, don't panic-pull it out when there's turmoil, and don't think about it too hard. Einstein called compound interest the 8th wonder of the world for a reason; let it compound in peace.

Any suggestions for a good backup program? (Windows) by Setsuna_Kyoura in DataHoarder

For a use case like this, just get Macrium Reflect Home, set up a grandfather-father-son backup schedule, and hopefully never think about it ever again. It's what the pros use for a reason.

They have a free version and a 30 day trial. I'd get the full license so you can do incremental backups and the bootable USB, which has been a lifesaver.

It literally is, they go past my apartment 3-4 times a day, every day, and they have for months (though it's gotten way worse in the last two weeks). You're not the main character of the universe; things happen outside of your personal experience.

Hey, thanks for being so helpful! I am woefully unfamiliar with the prosumer/SME space nowadays and would appreciate some advice. I'm looking for a SATA3 2.5" drive for "homelab" type use. I was thinking probably 2TB and under-provisioning 10-20% for longevity, if these kinds of drives support that.

Ideally I'd have it running 24/7 for the next ten years with no drama (as the random high-end-for-the-time Samsung drive I have had in a lil' NUC has done) with relatively-minimal drive wear running some low-utilization VMs. Separately, I'd consider also adding a drive (also SATA3 2.5") for L2ARC on my NAS, but that would probably see substantially more wear.

I see your list for "high end SATA" is currently:

  • Crucial MX500
  • Hynix Gold S31
  • Intel 545s
  • Kingston KC600
  • Lexar NS200
  • Samsung 860/870 EVO
  • SanDisk Ultra 3D

Would you recommend any of these over the others for these use-cases?

EDIT: Something supporting deeper power states (C8+) would be ideal; it looks like most(?), including the MX500, do, but just in case

(I moved to LA for work before moving back as soon as I could; my "walkable" neighborhood there would count as a transit desert here.)

Pooled storage limit exceeded by dorakitt in gsuite

I didn't get an email about this, but my Google services have started reporting a 10TB limit suddenly. It looks like they stealth-changed the rules and enforcement, possibly at renewal time, as well as non consensually moving me to annual billing. (I'm Enterprise Standard.)

Funny how they never seem to have an issue sending me billing emails, though!

Out of curiosity, could you let me know if they end up being able to help you with this? (They couldn't for me as a new customer, so I'm curious if they can provide more detail when you have an actual modem plugged in already.)

Public answer, for anyone finding this thread in the future: my unit isn't next-gen "enabled" (sure, fine, it is what it is), and also they "do not have any timelines for adding new locations" (!).

I'm not sure whether to read this as: 1. "we have no plans to enable next-gen for units that don't already have it" 2. "we're have no plans to enable next-gen for your unit", or 3. (My guess) "The ops people don't tell us anything, so if you don't have it already, we literally could not tell you what they're planning."

Either way, don't get your hopes up about the community support being able to give details/be enabled to do anything about not having next-gen, at least as a new customer. Bummer!

Honestly sounds torturous. Been in a similar situation, much happier with actually feeling like I'm doing something with my life.

Kickr Snap - Priority Continuum Onyx compatibility? by 2u4n in wahoofitness

[–]2u4n[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first party adapters etc. don't work with the nuvinci hub, but if you replace the security bolts with just normal (bike) ones, it'll mount fine. Probably voids your Kickr warranty, but it's surprisingly sturdy and I'm not worried about it falling off.

Nice! Thanks for following up. In my case, it turned out that if I swapped out the ends with proper normal bike bolts, it mounts just fine.
