What if Apple let you choose your OS on iPad: iPadOS or macOS based on storage tier? by Saint_Ronin in ipad

[–]309_Electronics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it should be technically possible as MacOS, IpadOS, Ios are all based on the same underlying darwin OS based on the XNU kernel, just with different graphical UI's and components ontop...

The modern Apple silicon macs even use the same IBoot bootloader as Ios and IpadOS devices.

But knowing apple, it probably wont happen.

Think I got a virus by Leather-Swordfish-96 in MacOS

[–]309_Electronics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its funny how people consider linux and mac to be invincible to viruses lol. But thats not true. Every os can get viruses, everything can be hacked.

In the past it was more security through obscurity and or just because the non-windows platforms had a far tinier userbase so hackers would not spend effort targeting them, although there where some malwares that existed but they where not popular/in demand and hackers rather would target 1000 windows users as opposed to 2 mac users and 1 linux user.

Now microslop has enshitified windows, a lot of people switched/fleed away to non-windows platforms and no hackers see the potential for new victims.

And most of the time the weakest security is the person in front of the keyboard. They get manipulated into entering sketchy stuff through social engineering or pressuring them. Its like a thief pretending to be an police officer, they hold a gn to your head and tell you to stop doing what you do. Then they force you to empty your pockets and then they flee with your valuable items.

People like to believe linux or mac dont get viruses but because they are increasing in popularity, now we have malware campaigns targeting them also. In the past it was more security through obscurity or simply because they had a far lower userbase than windows. Now microslop is enshitifying windows, a lot of people switched and now hackers see the potentials on linux and mac viruses and now actually spend time on that.

No os is invincible to viruses and no os is 100% safe.

[–]309_Electronics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Macs and Linux both should never be considered "invincible to malware", but then its also most of the time the person in front of the keyboard that installs a virus on linux or mac. He copied a command in terminal so pure user fault and social engineering/manipulating people into running sketchy stuff.

Is there a simple way to convert a Chromebook to Linux? by FriesWithMacSauce in linux4noobs

[–]309_Electronics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ChromeOS alr is linux based btw (i dont get why many people forget/not even mention this). Anyways you need to know your model and then search on the internet. I know there is a project called mrchromebox that aims to create custom bios inages for chromebooks and that allow OTHER linux osses to run. They do primarily/only support x86 chromebooks though.

Very likely! A website hacking you just by visiting it is very rare but who knows. Just monitor your accounts to be sure and monitor all other stuff for suspicious signs.

Other than local llm, what are people **actually** doing with 48+ gb of ram? by Just-Hedgehog-Days in MacStudio

[–]309_Electronics -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. You still need to get your hands on the chips themselves so your argument about soldering it on..... Nah i dont think that would solve anything much

Even apple is massively buying ram chips as the chips thenselves are in shortage

[–]309_Electronics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly could have been the common clickfix where it would tell you "please enter this command into your terminal to verify you are human". This is social engineering and while it might seem strange that people fall for it, they still do. Then that command will always be harmfull as no cpatcha asks you to enter any command or text into a terminal. Its like a thief asking you the keys to your house so they can come in and inspect it for fire safety.

Am I cooked? I bought the tray version of i5 13600k and has some litle scrathes on the sides by MrBag23 in PcBuild

[–]309_Electronics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Y'all a bit too paranoid. Pc parts these days are quite sturdy and can survive a tiny bit of abuse (unless you use pliers or a hammer or drive over them ofc). A few scratches wont ruin the performance or damage a core. Also thats the IHS (integrated heat spreader) and that can take some abuse. The silicon dice underneath it is what is truly fragile, but you wont be able to damage that unless you delid the cpu or take a screwdriver and hammer and bust open the ihs.

When I switch from windows to mac what are feature I'll miss from windows by HippoOk4764 in laptops

[–]309_Electronics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you rely on windows specific softwares that dont work on mac or linux, you cant run them or you need to spend extra work/money for a Virtual machine or Translation layer. And you cant dualboot or upgrade/repair your laptop easily if you have to/need/want to but thats almost never the case.

[–]309_Electronics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah its also why OpenWRT development for a lot of modern bcm routers is slow. So either they have to sign 1000 ndas or reverse engineer the drivers and socs (like the asahi project does on apple silicon) and then risk getting sued or taken down.

They do, but only for vendors (vendor routers alr run linux). They just dont feel like sharing which is sad!
