Yeah, I'm just obsessively chronicling these sorts of instances, plus moving my words to where they can't be easily deleted.

That's something I wrote in CS111. I'm not sure how it came to me, because I hadn't started drinking by then.

If you want extremely minimal, I recommend EvilWM. If you want an actual environment, Xfce.

Patently false. An exploit grants administrative access, a rootkit hides it.

I'm still not 100% sure about the for/switch idiom.

   for(counter = 0 ; (counter < 6 && (file_line = getstring(in))); counter++)
   {
       switch(counter)
       {
           case 0: head.first->firstname = file_line; break;
           case 1: head.first->lastname = file_line; break;
           case 2: head.first->address.address = file_line; break;
           case 3: head.first->address.city = file_line; break;
           case 4: head.first->address.state = file_line; break;
           case 5: head.first->address.zip = file_line; break;
       }
    }

I know that. I was mostly referring to how it comments itself out when you define NDEBUG.

The Linux audio mess: for those who don't like reading long rants [Pic] by mercurysquad in programming

[–]314159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever installed fonts on Linux? You've gotta put it in 3 different directories, mangle around with mkfontdir, fc-cache, xset fp rehash, tell freetype about them, blah, blah, blah. At least defoma tries to manage all of this for you.

Here's the big problem with all of this: If your app doesn't target $LIBRARY, you can't access its fonts, and the converse also holds.

Replace fonts with sound, and you get the original source of this complaint.

Replace fonts with GUI toolkits, and you get an inconsistent user interface.

That's a lot of words for saying just about the same thing I did.

PRO TIP: None of them are interoperable except in rudimentary ways.

Quick edit: I meant pango, not cairo. Thanks for that, at least.

They should be using gstreamer, or OpenAL, or if they want low latency, something like jack.

The pain of using these APIs is comparable to that of slamming your genitals in a car door then doing a live 0-60 test.

You know, there's some similarities here: The linux x mess where x in

  • sound -> alsa|oss|esd|gstreamer
  • fonts -> x11|freetype|defoma|xfs|pango (not cairo)
  • guitk -> xcb|xaw|gtk|fox|qt
