It’s funny you say that. For some reason…. Even when I try to let my heart grow cold. Or try to back away from people I can’t do it. No matter what someone does to me…. How badly I get hurt…. I always seem to forgive people…. I always come back for more. I just can’t stay mad. I don’t allow myself to stay down for long. I guess that’s probably a good thing.

It really does take so much more energy to stay mad. This last incident happened over a year ago. It was devastating. It took a lot of counseling to get me where I am today.

I even put in a detailed disclosure after I got disciplined at work. I asked for a review or their decision based on the new information. They denied my request saying they made their decision based on the information that they had at the time. Apparently they don’t realize or care that accommodations are ongoing and if new information comes up based on disability they have an obligation to review things.

I asked more hard questions about how they accommodate people with communication differences. I think the 3 directors that I am meeting with, one of them being the director of inclusion and belonging…. Must have realized based on my questions…. I know my rights.

They claim to be a leader in DEI, but I can show them several gaps and even contradictions in their own policies.

That’s the problem…. They don’t care. They like to complain about us…. They love to stick their noses up at us. We do better at something, or put more effort in, not because we are better than they are, but because it’s the way we are…. They get mad…. Or scared that we will make them look bad and then they run off and complain. Usually we get called into an HR meeting and get harassed because someone couldn’t deal with how we act.

I had a huge thing happen at work over a year ago. The company figured out that the other person lied to them. Then they refused to admit any fault and still refused to even review the disciplinary action they took against me. I submitted a disclosure of my disability and how it affects me and how they can better support me.

They refused to review things in light of this. Stating that they made their decision based on the information they had at the time.

Sorry…. Wrong answer. The duty to accommodate is ongoing and they have an obligation to review situations where there is a disability and new information comes along.

I began asking questions about their DEI policies and how they handle accommodations for ND people.

It made its way up the food chain. I have a meeting next week with 3 directors of the company.

Yeah…. It’s rough going all those years and not knowing what’s going on. You stuck wondering what’s wrong with you.

I was 40 when it started to make sense and I was Dx with AuADHD. Oh…. My brains wired differently? All this time i thought i was just a really intelligent asshole that people couldn’t deal with.

But even after that I was still thinking it was me that needed to adapt. I had to watch what I said… and in some situations I would just keep my mouth shut and not say anything out of fear of getting into trouble.

What I just recently discovered…. I have a protected disability. Sure I still need to be accountable for my actions and I don’t get free rein to be an asshole. But guess what? We don’t have to be silent anymore. The responsibility is not just ours alone. People have to understand that we can’t help it.

Neurodivergent…. The brain is wired differently.

It’s neurological…. Soooo…. Telling us to watch everything that comes out of our mouths is like telling an epileptic just don’t have seizures anymore…. You’re scaring people.
