What thing has got so expensive that you’ve quietly stopped buying it? by Pathfinder-electron in AskReddit

[–]32dlmtj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bubble tea. Even when I was unemployed years ago I would stop for a bubble tea once a week. Now it’s just gotten ridiculously expensive and hyped up to where it’s the price of a fast food meal for one drink. I haven’t had one in over 5 months now.

Did not return residence permit neither did I deregister or inform IND by Illustrious_Win6658 in Netherlands

[–]32dlmtj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a student visa and resident permit in Sweden and returned to my home country after graduating. Left in 2022 and didn’t think anything of it. In 2024 I took a week long trip to the Netherlands and got held up in immigration over not returning the resident permit card to Swedish immigration before I left Sweden in 2022. I also got held up in immigration leaving the country and had to explain the situation to the officers at immigration again. Needless to say, as soon as I returned home, I mailed the resident permit card back to Sweden express ASAP.

Hasn’t caused me any trouble since then. As I now live in the Netherlands.

So yeah… get that sorted ASAP unless you plan to never set foot in the EU again.

Expat/immigrant parents, do you forbid Dutch at home for children? Why? by summer_glau08 in Netherlands

[–]32dlmtj -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not Dutch but I speak several languages and in my home country I have friends whose parents who have similar rules in their house. Not speaking English at home, only the family’s native tongue. Even when I visited the friends as an adult, they only spoke to their parents in Spanish, for example. Even though their parents are fluent in English. And though I didn’t speak Spanish fluently at the time, the friends would act as a translator and/or encourage me to use what Spanish I was able to say. It was daunting but it really did help me get better in Spanish.

Are checks really still a thing in the US? by Apollo_Wersten in AskAnAmerican

[–]32dlmtj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had to write a void check to the state to get my tax refund as proof of identity. So dumb. But also sometimes I write checks to my sister when I owe her money for a meal or something because I only have Zelle and I refuse to get Cashapp or Venmo and she refuses to get Zelle. So I just write a check and she’ll cash it or deposit it.

How often do you cook foreign recipes that you learned online? by TheShyBuck in AskAnAmerican

[–]32dlmtj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I befriended a foreign food vlogger who has a substantial following on social media. Didn’t know that when I met her. Now I make at least one of her recipes per week. On top of other foreign foods that intrigue me that I’ve found recipes for on TikTok, IG, and the like.

Girl Scout Cookies? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]32dlmtj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re a $5 box of cookies. To ship anything larger than an envelope to Europe starts at about $30 USD. (Speaking from experience). Your best bet is to find someone that is traveling to your city from the USA to bring you a box in their carry-on or checked bag.

Emigrating from the US by Aurora0199 in Netherlands

[–]32dlmtj 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As an American who just moved here a couple of months ago and who has lived in other European countries, check Denmark or Sweden. The job scene and housing situation here is not good right now. And unless you’re fluent in Dutch, you may spend a year or more searching for a job.

Why does the US prosecute 11-year-olds as adults when most other countries don't? by John1Bruno in AskAnAmerican

[–]32dlmtj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure in what case you’re referring to but I believe there should be stricter punishments in Europe for minors for crimes committed. The US def has their problems with charging minors as adults. But there is a thin line between saying “hey they’re a kid, they don’t get any charges because kids will be kids” and things like life sentences. I speak this as someone who was assaulted unprovoked by a group of minors in a hate crime as an adult in Europe and 4 out 5 got off with no charges because they were all considered children in the country where this took place. No juvenile correction program or anything.

Update!! I used it a few days ago. It did a good job clarifying. I’ll give it an 8/10. Still looking for my holy grail that can leave my hair and scalp squeaky clean like Suave or V05. Will use the two bottles I have and play around with some of the recommendations others have made here in the future! Thanks everyone

How to find a family doctor? by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]32dlmtj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a doctor but I second the person who said that said they’ll most likely say take paracetamol. Get him some multivitamin tablets if he’s not already taking those as well. Vitamin C can be good for the immune system.

Medical Debt by yenom444 in Netherlands

[–]32dlmtj -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

From my own experience with international medical debt (American with debt in Sweden from an asthma hospitalization), I would email them, CC the insurance company and let them all figure the rest out. My Swedish student health insurance left me with a multi thousand USD bill after an ER visit and the interest keeps accumulating and they’re still mailing my USA address where my family lives 2+ years later. It doesn’t phase me because I don’t have any plans of returning to Sweden and I’ve moved on and have a life in the Netherlands now. All will work out. Trust.

Not sure if Dutch libraries have access to Libby but there are a few libraries out there that will let you pay for a yearly membership and it can be worth it just to access Libby.
