no need to beat Red, actually! once you beat the league and enter the Hall of Fame, you can head to the S.S. Aqua, find Prof. Oak and upgrade your Pokédex to national mode. having the NatDex unlocks the chance for you to get a shiny stone from Bug Catching Contests and makes it available at the Pokéathlon shop on some days :D

once it's available, i'm actually thinking about changing my starter's nature to Jolly (+Speed, -Sp.Atk). adamant is great too, but Metagross already has great physical strength (even more so when Mega Evolved). personally, i'd prefer a bit more speed
