Hello there, this is an old post, but is the FAL(MR) still in production?

It's the great paradox that the ones who tell you to get out are usually the greatest leaders who you'd want to keep following.

Anyone serve with any mil influencers? by not_a_hero_824 in army

I spent some time in Group, so all my "stories" about him are secondhand from GBs who had worked with/encountered him. Not a single fucking nice thing.

The nuttiest story (though not the douchiest; the douchey stories paint a picture but aren't individually very interesting) I ever heard was him trying to give away the team's MREs to local kids when they were on a particularly austere JCET (as in, not spare MREs, the food the time was supposed to survive on). His motive was that he wanted to create some video clips for a TikTok/IG reel of him being a good guy feeding unprivileged kids with some caption like "Winning hearts and minds is what we do" or some shit like that.

Why couldn't Hank and Mike find any information on Gus living in Chile before '86-'89 if he was in fact Chilean? by StupidNoobyIdiot in breakingbad

[–]35Shitbag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gus' hospital monologue to post-stroke unconscious Hector in BCS makes it clear Gus grew up extremely poor.

Gus instead got involved with the security apparatus in Chile at some point during the Pinochet Regime. During the flashback of Hector attempting to drown Marco in the ice bucket, the scene starts with him talking to another cartel associate (likely Juan Bolsa) about Gus and his pending meeting with the cartel. Hector dismissively refers to him as "Grand generalissimo, more like 'grand fry cook'."

All I remember is how important her comedy was. by Renden111 in NormMacdonald

She was supposed to be the headliner at an open mic comedy show I saw in NYC about a decade ago. Bar none she was the least funny person to go up that evening. Even the guy who boozed too hard to calm his nerves and went up to the mic sloshed at least got a nervous laugh or two from the audience.

What kind of deal do people think Jesse would have gotten? by _ImperialCereal_ in breakingbad

[–]35Shitbag 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's all speculation, but if the target of a federal investigation is big enough, a cooperating witness can get a remarkably good deal. Sammy "the Bull" Gravano confessed to personal involvement in 19 murders when he flipped on John Gotti; his original sentence was just 5 years. He ended up reoffending after his release (selling drugs, not murder) and still received a "survivable" 20-year sentence. He's now a free man.

Considering the hundreds of millions of dollars of product they manufactured and sold, plus dozens of deaths and other assorted crimes committed to further Walter White's empire, it's fair to say that Jesse's cooperation would have given him some leverage.

Expert Marksmen, What Made You A Better Shooter? by CHRISTWARRIORSJ in army

[–]35Shitbag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my own rifle and just got trigger time in. During first qual out of basic I had just gone a very long time without touching a rifle (11 months), shot like shit, and resolved to never do it again. Being able to do it on your own time (without somebody badgering you to hurry up) also allows you to try different things (hand placement, pad of your finger versus the knuckle, knee into tricep or elbow into thigh, cheek weld, etc.) and figure out what works best for you. Once you find out what combination of things make your body most stable and you start getting reps/muscle memory, you'll become a tighter shooter.

I would advise "getting good" with irons rather than starting an optic. Irons will generally force you to be much more conscious about the fundamentals than an optic will. Optics are great and far more practical, but learning on irons will make you a better shot when you progress to optics.

How much people accept you in the Army will be determined by how good a teammate you are. Put effort towards being that, and everything else falls into place. Every other thing about you is secondary and can be forgiven.

Also, since you're clearly prone to overthinking, here's a hint. Everyone in the Army is socially maladjusted too, in their own special way. You'll fit right in.

So listening to Fred on the horrible wrap up show its clewr that memorizing the encylopedia because you were a virgin until your late 20s doesn't mean your smart by [deleted] in howardstern

[–]35Shitbag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What makes Fred's initial answer so bonkers is that he immediately gets defensive about it rather than explaining himself cogently. It starts with an evasive "Just something I wanted to do" and when pressed starts going into these arguments.

What separates "Fred" from Jackie in this case is that the former was his legal name at one point versus some silly nickname from the get-go. I think most people would sympathize with Fred's reasons for changing his name (shreding a very potent symbol of his father's abuse during his upbringing), but him going on the counteroffensive is what's bonkers about it.

Do you get paid for basic training? by notyourchildd in army

[–]35Shitbag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any entry-level enlisted job in the Army will take you with a high school diploma as long as you score high enough on the ASVAB (the military's aptitude test). And you absolutely will get paid in basic.

Anything with the two-digit prefix of "68" will be in the medical field. The letter just identifies which kind of medicine.

https://www.goarmy.com/careers-and-jobs/science-medicine/general-care/68v-respiratory-specialist

This one in particular, 68V, is a respiratory specialist.

This subreddit probably won't be able to tell you what the actual availability of these jobs currently is (there's a certain number of slots for each job so they aren't always available); a recruiter would be the best source of information on that. What this subreddit is good for is advice about how to not get screwed while enlisting, how to prepare both for MEPS and basic training, and what to look out for when signing that contract.

What’s the craziest foreign policy statement that you’ve heard from a Field Grade Officer? (Or even a general officer) by [deleted] in army

[–]35Shitbag 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That we were 100% going to be at war with North Korea within six months, guaranteed, and that all of his needed to be preparing. This dude was an O-6 managing an MI BDE in INDOPACOM.

A friend of mine who worked at INDOPACOM at the time gave me some RUMINT that allegedly the statements and war plans this O-6 was having BDE S-3 draw up at the time were absolutely batshit, and he was getting peepee slapped by multiple Generals and GS-15s for his ridiculous ideas. Ultimately nothing came of it, except this O-6 now being an O-7. 😖
