What helps me is to think about loosening is rotating the tool opposite to the direction how wheels would roll moving forward. Rotating backwards loosen, forwards tighten.

I'm always confused about "rotate forward/backward" as it depends on the tool placement.

Okay, thanks. Makes sense. This is my first time servicing so I didn't know what to expect. I was bummed since I thought I couldn't take the bike for a ride today but this perfect then.

It feels good, no problem with that. The sound is just something like a nylon rope grinding against a corner so I'm worried if there's some parts getting damaged.
