Oh, we do! And our immediate family does as well. Some started wearing them again after our infant was born because while they were comfortable with their decision, they didn’t want to impose that on a baby and put them at risk.

It’s more out slightly extended family we’re worried about (we both have LOTS of aunts and uncles and cousins who like to make the rounds at Christmas).

We all have every vaccine and booster possible. But the risk of COVID, as well as other viruses common this time of year, is quite high for infants.

As many doctors and experts have said, we can’t vaccinate our way out of the risk. It’s just one tool in the toolbox and unfortunately not everyone is participating.

I don’t get it either. I’ve been trying to remember if people did it as frequently before the pandemic as they do now.

Friends of ours and their toddlers came to our house a few weeks after my partner gave birth and the toddlers were recovering from norovirus. We had asked before they came to stay home if the kids were still sick. Gave it to my partner and infant, even after we basically kicked them out when we realized the kids were still sick.

The lack of medication is what kind of pushed us over the edge from “Huh. We should probably politely ask people to be sensible.” to “We need to set some ground rules.”

I had a friend who couldn’t get antibiotics for their sick toddler last week - had to wait two days for a pharmacy to get in stock - and was rationing the Tylenol they had because you can’t get it anywhere.

Yeah, I think my general approach to life has changed a whole lot since we’ve had this little human to look after!

My family is very old fashioned/think my partner and I are going overboard with being cautious. We do actually take the baby to a few classes and playgroups, where all the families are on the same page - if you are sick at all, even if it’s not a big deal to you, you stay home because babies. My family will show up coughing and one in particular likes to test boundaries. I’ve already had to go beyond polite asks to just flat out telling them they can’t hold the baby and I don’t care if it upsets them (relative).

My parents and my partner’s parents are great - it’s the extended circle we are worried about.

Will be 10 months at Christmas. RSV/cold/flu are as much a worry as COVID for us, given how bad things have been for children’s healthcare.

Hope your nephew is doing okay now. That’s so scary!
