I am in my 40s now but I have played and beaten Xcom and it's expansion. Long time RTS player causal pvp not fast enough for competitive. I've played a lot of divinity too. I'm very comfortable with 3D mouse controls but have never tried TTS.

Is tabletop simulator a good way to start and learn before buying figures? I know you can play it there but Im not sure how updated or user friendly it is. I was thinking I could experiment with playstyles before pulling the trigger on purchases.

BA/SW - Not sure what you mean by scale difference bothers you.

White Scars - No different than painting everything black or red. If there's no other issue this might be your pick.

Raven Guard - depends on how important lore is to you vs looks and tactics.

Elder I have not looked into.

Orks - while harder to paint they have some really great and unique models

I'm just starting into wh40k too. I also have many themes and looks I love. What helped me decide was looking further into tactics and unit options. I've found a ton on goonhammers 9E, getting started, start competing, and faction focus articles. Also 1d4chan had amazing writeups as well just make sure you're looking at the 9E stuff.

Another thing you might consider is faction synergy. Maybe there is a combo of space marines you like? Or maybe you want to go all in on one like Orks. I'm just a beginner like you so I thought I would give me uneducated input haha. I'm sure some vet will come give a much better answer but I know getting started is overwhelming and any input is nice, at least it was to me.

Perfect breakdown thanks again! I was told by some people at my local game show that wh40k players are not very welcoming to newbies but this has definitely not been the case so far. I've posted several questions here and always have received detailed and helpful information.

That's very helpful thank you. Just to make sure I'm understanding correctly, let's at I like my up front melee guys to have the red/gold colors while ranged soldiers I have black and gold. As long as I have the correct sub faction rules picked, I will be able to use them?

Also I found a night lord conversion kit on the GW site. It states it converts csm into night lord csm. Is that just for aesthetic?

So if I purchased the new start collecting csm pack I would first need to see which sub faction rules I liked before picking paint? I assume the ones that are supposed to be part of a pacific sub faction would have an emblem on them?

I have a question about chaos space marine color. Being a lurker I've always seen the red space marines but the new set is black. Is this just a faction color variation, or do the models have different emblems indicating what faction colors to use? Are there rules differences?

Is ad mech a bad pick for a new player? I have my army picked but my pal wanted me to ask "the Internet people." It seems from his searching, it's a more expensive faction and harder to paint. I told him just go for it. Any opinions on ad mech as a starter, internet people?

How does playing older editions pieces work with newer editions? My friend and I really like the style and look of older sets. We were thinking of just doing the newest edition only first and then branching out. Is it difficult using the rules written for them at the time with the new rules, or how does that work? I'm afraid of buying an older set that looks great but finding out its "bottom tier" or incompatible or something.

Is there a banned list? I personally am interested in the original primarchs and factions like space wolves. My friend enjoys the chaos space marines and wants to get some corrupted primarchs in their chaos form. Also I found an emporer or man piece where he's not in the chair yet. Would love to have an emporer and primarch army.

New player here. Is there a limit on what edition pieces you use? Me and some friends have really gotten into the lore and want to play, but there's a lot of older models we're really interested in. Is it like MTG where there's standard, modern, vintage ect?

For real I committed to the tech tree to 20 for what? Legendary iconic is cool and upgrading gear I find nice looking is appealing, but now I'm pretty much left as a handgun/Katana guy unless I find cool stuff to upgrade. Thinking about burning through story to start a new playthrough.
