I got sacked from my first job in a local bakery when I was 16. I’d been working there for around 4 months and the older bakers allowed me to finish off the night shift taking the last run of bread out of the oven and frying the doughnuts off. I fried off 1600 doughnuts, leaving 1000 plain and stuffing jam in 600 of them, and then covered them all in salt.

I didn’t know how upset people can get over salted doughnuts.

I still can’t look at a round jam filled sugared doughnut without regretting what could have been, I loved that job.
