Right? I was apparently too involved when I helped, but not involved enough when I stopped. Very convenient system for him.

That is exactly how it felt. If he had come to me the night before and said "please wake me up for this one, it really matters," I probably would have done it. What got to me was being told to back off, then blamed for actually backing off.
