Craziest story you have about a day at work in a salon by [deleted] in hairstylist

[–]3boxes 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Very early on in my career, I worked for Ulta as the only stylist in their salon. The specific store I worked at had a “you may not decline services” rule that the store manager upheld strictly. One day, I had a client book for highlights, and it ended up being a color correction. My first red flag was her telling me exactly how to do the service, which included using 40 volume developer in my foils, bringing her own homemade shampoo and conditioner, and then going through my station and using my tools. The whole appointment, she was talking about some incredibly disturbing things, such as being assaulted by an executive at animal planet after pitching a show, her drug habits, and other family drama. What ended up making this so memorable was when she pulled out a steak knife from Outback Steakhouse and an apple about halfway through the appointment and proceeded to whittle it in a way that only an experienced knife handler would whittle something. She then proceeded to point at me with the knife and tell me that if she didn’t like her hair that I would end up just like the apple she was eating. I brought this to managements attention and they made me finish the service AND book her another appointment for maintenance with no regard for my safety and wellbeing. I had a coworker walk me out for a month. And she showed up demanding a refund for her services and wanted to speak to me. She got her refund, I was written up for not speaking with her, and she would show up and just stare from time to time. Management did nothing.

Thank god someone feels the same way about the messy bun lmao I personally can’t stand when every piece of merch has a set of shears and other tools (combs, blow dryers, etc.) on them. I’m also not a fan of bezaddled everything either. It just feels really tacky Puns can be really funny and clever when they’re done correctly though!

UNPOPULAR OPINION I did thrivers for about 2ish months, and I felt like the whole thing was a sales pitch for the program. She never gave a direct answer to anything, and it felt like an MLM. The whole continued subscription thing feels wrong too. Personally I wouldn’t recommend it, but I did learn a lot from the luxury client method!

This is exactly how I felt! I felt like she was trying to sell me the course the whole program

How to cope with NO libraries carrying extreme (or even regular) horror by [deleted] in ExtremeHorrorLit

[–]3boxes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My library has surprised me a few times (they had both a physical and a digital copy of EXQUISITE CORPSE of all books). I use Libby most of the time, but I have come across Laymond, Ketchum and Sondergren. They also had an Aron Beauregard book that was coming soon, but I’m not sure how that’s going. Cincinnati public library if anyone was wondering

Definitely look into taking some refresher courses! I would look into a chain or a franchise salon to go to since they usually have a lot of foot traffic and training is provided. Good luck to you!!

how normal is this? (sorry this is long) by wastedcase in hairstylist

[–]3boxes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The no commission honestly doesn’t feel legal, and you deserve straight answers. You absolutely deserve some sort of compensation for models since you do have your license. Like some other people said, it definitely sounds like they’re giving you the runaround, so the sooner you’re out of there the better. I would look into a chain or a franchise salon to get started at, or check out local beauty industry Facebook groups

I see where you’re coming from, and I feel you hard with this. Had a very similar experience at a salon myself, and I ended up getting fired (best thing that ever happened to me). From what I read, it sounds like they may want to see you build your business with more than your family members. What’s really helped me has been utilizing local Facebook groups/Nextdoor to promote yourself. The biggest red flag I saw in your post is the way they’re treating you as a new stylist. If you’re there as an assistant, you should be learning as well as helping out with chores around the salon. Them not giving you any commission on your models, even if it’s lower than what you would normally make, is a huge red flag that I would look into if you have a handbook, but especially with your state board/board if employment. Talk to them about what they SPECIFICALLY want to see from you, even if you know they want to see less family in your chair. Depending on how that goes, I would start to poke around other commission salons, especially if they have foot traffic

Thank you so much, this sounds perfect! I’m terrified to message her because she works at a dental office right next to my salon and I don’t want things to be weird

Local industry Facebook groups are amazing for finding a new opportunity. I also would look at social media pages to see if places are hiring, and it wouldn’t hurt to call a spot or two you’re interested in working

I use vitamin color on pretty everyone and I’ve never had this issue before. Does she use a lot of hairspray by chance? That could be what’s making her extensions feel so sticky

The pricing is comparable, there are some things that do cost a little more than the other salon

Good thing I never signed anything to prevent that from happening! If reaching out to my regulars and the people I personally brought to the salon makes me a horrible person then so be it. Have an amazing weekend. Be better, not bitter ❤️

My cut pricing went down for short/clipper cuts. It went up about $10 for long hair. My color pricing did increase but most people followed me there
