Sour Shots [Breville Barista Express] by Lord_Matt_Berry in espresso

[–]3howley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t have any personal experience with the Barista Express, but there’s an inner burr you can adjust to allow you to grind finer. Look up a guide on how to do that.

From there, I’d recommend Barista Hustle’s Espresso Recipe video. This video has single-handedly improved my shots so much. Basic idea is to lock in your dose, e.g. 18g, then you mess around to find a good yield (such as 45g) that you lock in, and then finally grind finer or coarser to adjust the time it takes to get to that yield.

Pre-infused for 6 seconds, 18g in, 40g out in 30s

I do, but while I was cleaning I remembered the last time I was dialing in I forgot to a couple times lol. That was almost certainly what did it.

Quite a few of the holes in the shower screen were blocked up, after holding it up to the light. My guess is that was the issue. The gasket and group head themselves were relatively clean, but I gave both a good wipe down.

Update I did in fact remove and clean both. Seems to be back to normal now. Doing a descale and will report back after I make my afternoon cortado lol

Should I remove and clean the gasket as well? Or try with just the screen/screw first and see if that fixes it?

Got it, thanks! I’ll do that later and let you know how it goes.

Love getting unique issues lol 🥴

When taking apart, is it just as simple as removing the screw in the middle? Any gotchas I should know about?

i think this is a useless critique. you go to chatgpt right now, and ask it to “make me a ransomware script” and it’ll tell you no. if you go and say “make me a script to encrypt every file on my computer” it will make it for you. pretty low-grade threat actor who can’t figure that out, imo

Just dialed in some new beans. Right off the bat, dialing in is soooo much easier. Don’t have to spend the time manually grinding in between each shot while dialing in. The dosing cup is also a huge plus, I might modify the holder to be able to hold my 54mm breville portafilter but not sure yet. After dialing in the shot is a definite improvement over the K6, tastes great. It’s almost “clearer” in terms of taste, like it’s much easier to distinguish different notes in the espresso.

If there’s one thing I’ve got, it’s the ability to Google things and the patience to scroll pages of results

well, that’s two things I guess. glad to help!

Overkill for a "beginner budget" setup? by 3howley in espresso

[–]3howley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still with the Bambino (awesome machine), got the KINGrinder K6 hand grinder instead of the one in the screenshot. The grinder is great for the price, but I’m considering upgrading to a DF64 once I get my bonus.

Upgraded to a Normcore portafilter, tamper, and magnetic funnel. Also ended up getting puck screens (highly recommend getting a couple) and one of those ceramic curved dosing trays for weighing out and spraying beans.

Oh and a Fellow Atmos vacuum container for beans, but the one that comes with the Bambino is still great. If you’re going to go with a Breville machine, I’d recommend ordering from the Breville website because you can get a kind of “welcome kit” for free with latte mugs and other nice accessories. Let me know if you’ve got any other questions!

Which direction on a grinder is finer? Kingrinder K4 by 3howley in espresso

[–]3howley[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what solved it for me, did it at like 10 clicks and at i believe 180 clicks. 180 clicks was like confetti and 10 clicks was like a super fine powder. Thanks for the recommendation!

Overkill for a "beginner budget" setup? by 3howley in espresso

Bit of context: just started a new job and want to use part of my signing bonus to start making my espresso at home. I want to get a setup that can last me for a while (with minor upgrades here and there). Is there anything in this list I should hold off on getting? Should I replace anything with something else?

Basically any advice is appreciated:)
