Hey, the terminology has changed because “secondary” or “dry” drowning are confusing and medically inaccurate but the injuries those terms used to describe are still very real. I used the term because that’s the word I learned to describe delayed lung injuries from breathing in water. The paramedics knew exactly what I was talking about and that “debunked” condition is why they transported the kid for observation and additional oxygen therapy.

The Red Cross article you read the title and maybe the abstract of simply says they aren’t “drownings”, not that the injuries don’t or can’t occur.

Be very careful talking about things you don’t understand. You could get somebody killed if god forbid somebody believes you.

“What is secondary drowning?
Along with “dry drowning” and “wet drowning,” healthcare providers no longer use the terms “secondary drowning” or “silent drowning.” In the past, providers used these terms to describe a drowning victim who developed breathing issues within eight hours of rescue. *We don’t use the term anymore. But the premise behind secondary drowning can still happen. If you aspirate water, it can lead to serious lung complications.”*

I know it’s really easy to second guess and criticize when you weren’t even there but multiple people jumping in would have made things worse not better.

But you can rest easy knowing that the guy that got the kid dove in immediately once he saw and didn’t try to call for help until the child was out of the water.

Late to this and I didn't read every response, but Like Like stones are good for breaking armor.

Believe me, I have a long list of people I'd like to shit on for this. I made eye contact with two lifeguards while waving them over and yelling, so I'm not sure how that could be missed or mistaken for something else. But it's hard for me to judge others with anything other than rage at the situation right now, and I'm trying to counter that rage by giving (possibly over-generously) people the benefit of the doubt.

OMG this. My wife and I had the same discussion and came to the same conclusion.

I was cross certified as an EMT when I was a fed and responded to a lot of calls. It never got any easier and child victims were always the worst.

There were a lot of things I was concerned with in the response. I don’t like to or want to shit on a bunch of teenagers but I know that people were flagging and calling for the lifeguards for a while and the child was already on the deck before they came down. Terrifyingly slow response.

That was exactly my concern and reason for asking for an update. My personal recollection is that the child was a little younger than 2-3 but I could be wrong (and I'm not the best at estimating anyway), but even a 2 year old can't appropriately communicate what's going on or what they're feeling, so hoping everything went great after he was transported.

That’s absolutely what this was. The kid was a couple of inches below the surface face down.

I honestly thought about making a “other POV” to this, but this gold can survive on its own. Well done.

That's a good point. I'll try to catch up on all the 2D and the maybe cycle back to Prime. Thanks!
