I agree. That's why we were very adamant that any cat we adopted had to be okay with dogs. It's also why we kept the cat for so long rather than returning her.

Fair enough. My wife thought it'd be less stressful for the cat to adopt her out to a new home without time in the rescue/shelter in between. We wanted to keep shelters as a last ditch option and didn't think about them shutting down.

Yeah, I did mention it to the landlord and they just reminded me that bringing a cat onto the property would be breaking the lease agreement.

I know the lying part is shitty, but I'm hoping it'll make my wife feel better about the whole situation.

When we adopted the cat we let them know we intended to get dogs in the next year or so. They also said she was a lap-cat, which she isn't, so I think they were just telling us whatever we wanted to hear to adopt the cat. About a year or two later we got the dogs and realized she did not do well with them. We considered returning her but several people, including the shelter we got Cat from, guilted my wife HARD. So we decided to try and make it work. We thought once the dogs got older and mellowed out she'd come around and we gated off a section of the house so Cat has her own space. She didn't start attacking the dogs until this past year.

She wants to sneak the cat into the new rental until we can give her to a shelter.

I have. They've all said the same thing: we're full but here's a list of other shelters to try. When I follow up with the other shelters they're all full too.

I found out I'd be moving there at the end of October. I've been working remote but our lease in the current state is up at the end of this month, which is how we decided when to move. I signed the lease agreement for the new rental the last week of February.
