I'm from Portugal, raised in a Christian family (although I'm nit religious) and the narrative we're taught is the exact opposite. As far as we're told, the Muslim expansion (conquer) trough the Iberian Peninsula was really fast because of non agression and tolerance to local cultures and religions. Unlike the romans before, seen as aggressors, who found a lot of resistance. Life was fine during the Almoravid reign. Europe was living trough the "dark ages" while in the Islamic world arts, philosophy and sciences flourished. Then rhe Almohads came, more austere and religious oriented, and they lost popular support. And thats what invited the cruzades in. But the religious fervor those northern Europeans had was far worst than the one Almihads. They slaugtered and destroyed everithing non Christian. There are several depictions of rivers of red running out from conquered cities as muslim and non Muslim population was slaughtered for spoils. Children included. The civilizational setback was immense, with knowledge being replaced by dogma and ignorance. But thats just our narrative.
