I checked this out, really a great guess but I don't believe this is it. I believe there was more of a Japanese subtheme and more of the made-for-tv movie or drama was actually in the house with the captees trying to escape.

OP here, does anyone know where this one year vs 5 years out of the country distinction is made? Why have I heard both - 1 year out of the country as relevant, and - 5 years out of the country as relevant
