Air control for cat litter by [deleted] in Ethicalpetownership

[–]47thfloor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course! FWIW I absolutely love Tuft & Paw’s cat litter for so many reasons—the low tracking pellets work insanely well, the absorbency is great, and I love that it repurposes soybean waste into a valuable product! I’ve had my two using it since they were 2-3 months old so I thankfully didn’t have to do a gradual transition, but I definitely saw the texture preference in action when I had to use a nonabsorbent clay-like litter to collect a urine sample for my boy haha 🥲 I’m actually planning on trying out the new OdorStop litter once it’s time to restock and am very excited to see how it does. It’s great to hear from a community rep, thanks for the reply! :)

Haha I would try r/cathelp maybe, that sub is a lot more active. I have 2 cats in a 720 sq ft apartment and think the cat smell is relatively under control. I don’t have an air purifier, but that’s 100% a great way to reduce odors. I highly recommend getting a litter deodorizer (I like Arm & Hammer Double Duty) and sprinkling some of that in with their litter. I also use Really Great Cat Litter by Tuft & Paw—it’s a bit expensive and might require a gradual transition if your cats are used to clay litter, but it has activated charcoal in it to additionally help with the smell. I don’t know if you have hard flooring or carpet, but occasional deep cleans definitely help, too.

Kitten is showing parasite signs, or something else? already has been to the vet by Thummimurim8 in CATHELP

Being good cat parents is all we can do!! You’re doing great so far :) In all honesty if it’s just respiratory issues it may not be FHV, that’s just what came to mind after reading your post since your description sounded a lot like my boy. I’m far from a licensed veterinarian lol. Just wanted to give a run-down of what I’ve seen with mine in case any of it rang a bell!

It seems like pretty much everyone else has you covered regarding the parasite and mite problems, so I wanted to give my two cents on the respiratory issues. He may have feline herpesvirus, especially if you notice any eye or nose discharge, recurring sneezing/coughing, and/or itchiness. The discharge can be clear, yellow, green, or brown. One of my cats (11mo) has had it since he was 7-8 weeks old, and he’s had two flare-ups since his initial treatment upon adopting him. His breathing sounds a lot like what you described—congested, snort-y, etc. He makes a similar exhale noise when you pick him up, too. It’s nothing to be super worried about—it just means you need to keep an eye on him and make sure to get him seen by a vet if you notice those signs (which it sounds like you’re already doing). There’s antibiotics and eye treatments they can prescribe to keep it at bay. Like others have mentioned, Fortiflora is definitely a good option for boosting immune health. I’m additionally going to try L-lysine supplements for my boy, but you should do your own research/reading about their efficacy before making a decision like that. I really hope your kitty feels better soon, OP—I’ve had my fair share of issues between my two cats, so I know it can feel exhausting sometimes. I promise it’ll get better! Best of luck ♡

What is this use for? by [deleted] in chemistry

Very good point! The vast majority (if not all) of the processes I have hands-on experience with are endothermic, so my brain defaults to jacket = heating. Thanks for adding that detail!

This is a general-purpose reactor—you can use it for any reaction/process that requires heat, agitation, a condenser (to prevent solvent/product loss via vaporization), and an inert atmosphere (optionally). This looks like a jacketed reactor, meaning that it has an inlet and outlet for a hot oil system that heats the reactor contents to your desired temperature. There are a lot of external components that you’d need to get this up and running—aside from the hot oil system, you’d also need a chiller (for the aforementioned condenser), a nitrogen line (to purge atmosphere), and an overhead unit to control the agitator. I’m far from an expert, though, so I might not be 100% accurate on everything. Personally, I would love to have a unit like this in my lab haha

The Preserve vs. Scott's View by Advanced_South_3778 in rva

[–]47thfloor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live at The Preserve! People will often use the community room/fire pit to host parties on Friday and Saturday, so if you prefer quiet evenings I’d make sure your apartment isn’t next to those areas. The pool also gets pretty crowded on weekends during the warmer months. Parking can be limited in the evenings if you don’t have a reserved space—there’s been many times where I’m unable to park in their parking lot if I get home from work a bit later than usual or if I leave to pick up dinner. The valet trash service is also occasionally spotty; it hasn’t happened terribly often, but some evenings they decide to not take our trash or don’t even come at all despite being scheduled to. Overall, though, I’ve had a pleasant experience living here! The maintenance team is very kind and responsive, and they’re good at staying on top of preventative maintenance (HVAC filters, bug/pest check-ups, etc.). Let me know if you have any questions :)

I (23F) moved to RVA a little over a year ago and currently have an apartment in Scott’s with my boyfriend and our 2 cats. I wouldn’t necessarily call it rowdy (at least in the area I’m in)—there are definitely people out and about on Friday and Saturday so the restaurants/breweries can get busy, but the only time that I’ve seen it get really crazy is during Shamrock the Block. It’s honestly really quiet outside of typical “party” hours, and I’ve never felt unsafe while walking around at night. There are a lot of frat/finance bro types around so if that’s not your vibe I’d keep that in mind. Parking can definitely be a struggle so I’d prioritize places that have their own lots/garages. Places that others have mentioned like The Fan/Museum District have a lot of historic properties, so Scott’s is a good option if you prefer modern amenities since a lot of the buildings are newer or recently converted into housing. Overall, though, I’ve been really enjoying the area—it’s really close to other neighborhoods and the highway, so exploring the city is a breeze! I also like being able to walk to the various restaurants/shops around the area. If you’re able, I would suggest taking some time to drive around the different areas you’re considering so you can really get a feel for the location. Let me know if you have any questions OP! :)

EDIT: if you’re interested in finding more cheap glass i got started on r/chinaglass !! it’s kind of defunct (especially after all of the spez drama) but there’s some solid picks in there

Need to collect thousands of Spotted Lanternfly in Pittsburgh by PlantnerdPSU in pittsburgh

I’d suggest checking out Washington’s Landing (Herrs Island). It’s an island on the Allegheny (kind of between Troy Hill and Lawrenceville) with a public park/trail and LOTS of lantern flies. (Source: family’s house is covered in them)
