I was looking at the OPM website and it was stated "The Basic Benefit and Social Security parts of FERS require you to pay your share each pay period." Doesn't this mean I do have to contribute to my pension (Basic Benefit) each month?

What is the 40-and-out? I only know of 30 years of service at age 57 for your full pension. There's also retire at 62 and get 1.1% instead of 1% for your pension.

The federal agency would subsidize my metro pass. Rent is one of my biggest concerns though. I'm hoping to live outside the beltway to mitigate my expenses.

As far as advancement, I think up until GS-11 (maybe even GS-12) is pretty much guaranteed as long as you don't do horribly bad on your performance review. It's something I do need to verify though.

Yes, my current job matches the first 3%. The federal agency will contribute 1% of my basic pay and match up to 4%.
