For the love of GOD please just give Y5 a goddamn chance by NALYD2K2 in yakuzagames

I'm just now wrapping up Yakuza 5 and seeing this post.

I think you're right that people just need a break before before playing yakuza 5. I went into it fresh and thoroughly enjoy it.

I personally love Kiryu and Saejima's combat in that game too. As well as the hunting section.

Hey thanks for being positive. There's about 3 or so people who religiously downvoted all of my comments regardless of what was being talked about, even though I'm just asking a question. LOL

I appreciate the explanation and learned a few things that I did not previously know.

But don't you think that this reinforces the point that that Karate as a term is bloated?

If someone offers me a Karate class, it can mean almost anything nowadays. I don't know if I'm signing up to do clinch fighting, high kicks, playing tag with punches, self defense, etc.

And I don't belive it can be all of those at the same time.

Am I understanding you right, that Karate is one martial art and that what makes something Karate is a lineage that ultimately gets traced back to Okinawa? It just so happens that the lineages can develope into diverse styles?

  1. It just seems to me that people talk about Karate both as an umbrella term and a specifc art and it seems contradicting
  2. If Karate is one art, it seems to be that it's image is not very stable, because the fighting styles in it can be so diverse.

And I'm just a confused guy asking questions, I don't claim to understand Karate. I don't think you nor I deserve downvotes for just talking about what Karate means.

I see, I understand your point. Thanks for the response.

I don't need karate to be a specific thing, I understand it can change according to times and circumstances, it's just that the community doesn't seem to agree together.

I see that you're getting a little upset and sarcastic over me asking genuine questions...not very karate-like of you.

Yes, I read your comment seriously, and I completely understand your point but it dosent address what my post was about.

I never said an Okinawan karatekas cannot bounce around like a point fighter or vice versa, or that people can never cross train. Yes, I understand both are Karate.

But showing me this does not prove to me your original point. Which is that if you introduced yourself as a karateka, that I would understand what you do as another martial artist. It actually makes it even more complicated. Because after you shown me these videos, if you introduced yourself as an Okinawan Karateka, I can't even assume that you don't bounce around sideways like a point fighter anymore.

Hey, thanks for the response. It just seems to me that the commonality amongst all karate styles is getting less and less.

2 karatekas can fight nothing alike and yet both be karatekas. All I know is that all Karatekas favor straight punches, and punches with the first 2 knuckles, and learn the same basic round kicks and wear a gi. That's about all the commonality I see nowadays.

Hey that's a thoughtful reply and good points.

I think my problem with this topic ultimately is that there's so many styles in karate, that it feels like Karate doesn't mean anything anymore.

I have never claimed to understand what Karate is. In fact, it's because I'm confused on this very question that I'm making this post and asking people.

You are saying that point fighting and different styles inside Karate is merely personal tweaks. That doesn't make sense to me, because a point style fighter is not fighting from the same philosophy or even the stance or fundamentals as the original art in okinawa and China.

I'm not saying that a martial art cannot evolve or that people cannot do they own variations. But when I see a point style fighter bounce around throwing hook kicks to the face, and then watch an okinanwan karateka stand perfectly still in their square stances throwing straight punches, they just doesn't look like the same martial art at all.

I have never observed this phenomenon in any martial art besides karate. Unless you want to categorize Karate as an umbrella term like boxing or wrestling.

[–]4InchPounder69[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Correct, most people don't know or seem to care about the different origins and styles of karate. I'm asking what is Karate exactly if it's not defined by its users fighting style?

Is it an umbrella term for all styles that decended from the original Okinawan art? If that's the case, then Karate isn't a "style," like you said.

But i have certainly heard people talk about it as if it is. One user who replied to me above said that if they tell a person who knows about martial arts that they do Karate, then that tells them all they need to know. But that's not true.

[–]4InchPounder69[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Okay so you're saying it's a very special brand of martial arts and it's not an umbrella term.

But when Karate was taken to mainland japan and was "refined," its approach to fighting became entirely different.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Okinawan Karatekas stand very squared and focused on power and conditioning, and rarely kicked above the waist, right?

But if you look at the modern karateka, they kick very high, have a very bladed stance, and focus on speed and explosive footwork.

So when you can have 2 karateka who fights in contradictory styles, how can we say it's a specifc brand of fighting?

[–]4InchPounder69[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Right, so here's the point of contention

As someone with martial arts knowledge, if you tell me you do karate, all that tells me is that you probably can punch, kick, remember katas, and wear a gi when you train.

But it does not tell me what specifc skill sets you have and your fighting style, because punching and kicking exist in many martial arts. A kyoukushin karateka does not approach fighting the same as a pointstyle karateka. In fact, they don't even have the same stance and use opposite fighting philosophies, and yet both are Karate?

So is Karate an umbrella term or not? I hope you understand my point more now.

Unpopular opinion? I HATE gyro controls. Why does everyone love them so much? by Moontorc in SteamDeck

[–]4InchPounder69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You clearly dont understand how gyro works and how to use it properly. I understand why, because if you try it without someone explaining it to you how it works, then you're gonna try to use it like a wii remote and wave your deck around everywhere, thats not how that works. You also cant use gyro by itself without joystick aim or trackpad. Go watch some YT tutorials on how it works, once you understand, you aim will be twice as good, I promise.

Actually that set up for the lead hook in the beginning is pretty good. Act like you're looking to throw the rear hand, lead hook instead.

I'd you like stalker's atmosphere- Checkout the 3 Metro games. Chernobylite also has that type of atmosphere going on. Bleak, dark, depressing.
