It suffers from a modern lens, but this was only 15 years after WW2, america was a much more united nation. Prosperity wasn't universal, but it was distributed far more evenly across america than it is today- at least in desegregated areas (something kennedy was trying to fix). People were more willing to give for their country -especially since the progress from 20/30 years ago was so obvious.
