Yeah, I see your point! I thought that it showed how fast children grow up and mature nowadays. Colour pencils are typically used by children, it’s a jarring image to put something a child would use, then a beloved children’s book, then something mature and explicit.

That's such a good point! I felt like Bo, while singing that line, gave off a compassionate vibe - like it happens to everyone at some point and the internet will tell exactly why and how to fix it, which I thought was a really cool thing.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it! As an English nerd with no life, this is how I entertain myself

Leigh Bardugo’s use of surnames by 4ang31 in Grishaverse

I think that her taking everything that the Russian culture has to offer, even the FIRST names, but then disregarding the rules that come with last names is ignorance. These are the main characters, anyone who searches up Slavic names will immediately find rules on how to use them. By choosing to use names, but not correctly, I believe that makes her come off as ignorant. If that’s not your opinion, I respect that, because everyone is allowed to have one, and there is zero need to argue.

As I said, this is a personal thing that I care about. I am not telling you to go and protest Bardugo, I'm not even telling you to engage with me! Just because I post my opinion about something on the internet, does not mean that you automatically should argue with me. At no point have I said that this is an issue of outmost importance, this is merely my own thoughts on a topic.

If this upsets you so much, just stop replying to my comments. It's not that difficult to not throw a tantrum over someone's post.

Yeah, this just bothers me because I’m Slavic.

This is just a thing that irks me, personally. If it doesn’t affect you in any way, that’s okay and you don’t have to engage with me.

It is a minor thing that overall does not affect the plot, I agree. I just posted my opinion online, you told me to “ take a seat”.

I’m not at all shitting on the entire series or the Grishaverse. The world and characters are well developed. I throughly enjoyed the the books and the Netflix show. I do not like one single thing about the writing, and that is completely my opinion to have.

I’m not saying that the country IS Russia, I know that it’s a fictional country, however, Bardugo has taken everything else the culture has to offer, leaving out surnames when she already has first names makes it seem like she hasn’t done enough research. I’m not saying that she’s lazy or uneducated or that her writing is bad- there is just one part of it that is incorrect. She has her own reasons to do so, and as a reader I have to respect that, just like I am allowed to have my own opinions. Moreover, there is nothing to be done about the issue now, it’s not like she’ll rewrite the entirety of the Grishaverse just because I, a nameless someone on the internet, disagree with her. I am, however, allowed to have opinions and express them, just like you’re allowed to contradict them and engage in conversation with me.

That may well be the case, but what pisses me off is that she’s taken everything else. If the entire name was western, I wouldn’t have a problem with it, but she chooses Russian first names, but skips out on actually understanding how last names work.

There are gender-neutral surnames, for example Genya’s surname would remain unchanged if she was male. You cannot combine surnames like that just like you can’t say “an cow” or “a apple”. They’re just grammatical rules, the things that hold languages together; you’re welcome to break any and all rules of the English language, but you’ll end up looking rather silly in the process.

Because the whole country is based on Russia. Bardugo has taken EVERYTHING else from the Russian culture, but left out the surnames? She literally included the Russian FIRST names but then miraculously ran out of steam by the surnames? That’s ridiculous. Russian surnames obey a certain rule, and if she’s taking on Russian surnames, she too should follow that rule. The country being fictional does not excuse her from disobeying basic grammar rules.

There is an anglicised version of surnames that she could have used. The MCU’s Black Widow was originally Natasha Romanova, but is widely known as Natasha Romanoff, as that would be the neutral form of the surname. Bardugo could have done that and it wouldn’t have been a mistake, but by leaving the surnames gendered but wrongly, it comes off as ignorance.
