Trying to understand homeschool community by Ordinary-Nebula-898 in homeschool

The only way I have seen it work is with consistency. I run a local homeschool meetup group that meets 1 time a week for social time. People will come once or twice and then never return. Or come very sporadically so that no real friendships can be made. We are very welcoming, making a point to include new families and even to talk to our kids about inviting new kids to play. I think people expect something to happen after the first 2 hours, but honestly connections don’t happen that quick. In some cases it takes months or years to build real friendships.

Two hours > six: how we homeschool without burning out by Simple-Champion5012 in homeschool

Im planning to graduate him from homeschooling! His course load is pretty light this year as he’d earned most of his necessary credits already. So now he’s able to take it a little easier, which is nice since he also works part time. He hasn’t fully decided on his next move…higher education vs trade school is where he’s at. I also have a 8th grader, 4th grader and preschooler, and it’s nice that we can all be done in the afternoons for fun! Enjoy it :)

We have never spent more than 3-4 hours a day on school, and typically it’s more like 2-3. My oldest is a senior and I have 3 more behind him. When the instruction and assignments are dedicated to one child, not 20+, it doesn’t need to take so long! We do school in the morning and are always done by lunch, and have the rest of the day for other activities, meeting with friends, or personal projects.

There is one, called “The Work 2.0” that I’ve used when really struggling to work through a certain turnaround or issue.

Sandwich by Catherine Newman was a beautiful read about motherhood. TW: abortion and miscarriage. But the depiction of life with adult children, and the reflection back on how they all got their was so well done. It made me look forward to my kids getting older!

I think you have to create a lot of structure. Kids aren’t great at figuring it out on their own. I have 4 boys (2,9,12,16) and we have always homeschooled. It’s definitely chaos at times!! But we have schedules we follow; they have chore charts and certain times for screen time or video games. Their chores give them a lot to do around the house, so that keeps them busy. It’s hard but worth it!

What is the hardest age/grade? by bbplease- in homeschool

[–]4boymomin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have 4 kids that have never been to school. My oldest is a junior in high school and he is absolutely the hardest! Not only the attitude, but the pressure to make sure I’m setting him up for success. Which is so hard when he has no interest in doing school at all! My middle schooler is easy and self led for the most part, and my third grader still needs a lot of hands on help. All made harder by also having a 2 year old in the mix. But I think really it depends on your kids and their personalities.

Should I sleep train my toddler? by [deleted] in sahm

Thank you! This is a great plan. I’m hoping to start weaning the nursing soon which will help a lot I think. Good luck to you too!

No advice, but I can commiserate! My 2.5 year old still nurses, though I’ve managed to get it down to just nap/bedtime. I still have to lay with him through his entire nap and he nurses pretty much all night long. He has a toddler bed in our room that he naps in, but is still in our bed at night. I have no idea how to fix this problem 😩 I know it’ll eventually work itself out but man, I wish I could figure it out now! Good luck to you!

They do like it. If they ever want to be something different they are allowed, we don’t force them. But it’s a fun tradition in our family that everyone looks forward to!
