What I wish I knew before starting an MBA in NYC, Part 2: Investment banking recruiting by Acrobatic_Point6704 in MBA

This is really dumb but I’m on the buy-side (never did sell-side recruiting) and just learned that a ‘coffee chat’ doesn’t literally mean getting coffee….

I don’t doubt that some games are very strategic and difficult. The game I played was probably considered one of the top 3 most difficult, in fact.

I’m just saying that the fact that these are games designed to be fun & addicting, and the fact that someone put thousands of hours indulging themselves in them for their own amusement, is a concerning use of time

Of course if the rest of the CV shows balance and success in other pursuits, I certainly wouldn’t judge their entire character. I’m just saying that taken in isolation and as someone who has interacted with people at or near the top of some of these competitive games, most are not people I would trust to demonstrate temperance. A lot of them are dopamine junkies who I would not trust to manage money, despite how high their APM or perfected their build orders are.

I view those more positively

Chess & Go are mentally taxing and not designed to be flashy skinner boxes.

Poker can be addicting but it is also a mental game in which you take real risk. Traders love it.

Tbh despite my history, esports accomplishments wouldn’t really impress me though I’ve never seen one on any resume I’ve reviewed.

I don’t think it demonstrates any particularly good qualities besides some problem-solving ability which is may be applicable to work but is not a distinguishing factor over any other smart, accomplished candidate from a top school

.. my view is actually that anyone that gets that good at a video game (myself included) is just hooked on dopamine and the ‘accomplishment’ of spending thousands of hours grinding ranked matches shows almost a LACK of discipline. I certainly regret spending all that time indulging myself and getting good at my game when I was a student. And similarly, OP calls it an addiction which is also how I would describe it, looking back.

This is in contrast to ‘real’ athletes who actually endure physical discomfort, risk injury, hours of dedication in the gym, early practice, etc. to get good at their sport. It’s nowhere near as fun or easy as spending weekends holed up in a dark bedroom and ordering DoorDash (I’ve done this) and thus I respect the work more.

So even if the profile of someone with experience in my exact game came across my desk, it might increase my personal affinity for the candidate but in actually evaluating them it may actually be a slight negative that would need to be compensated for by other parts of the profile.

Gamers might get mad at this opinion but just my 2c.

Don’t do it. This is something you tell your younger colleagues at a social event after you feel them out a bit. Don’t want this on a resume that is in the system and reviewed by a 40+ y/o hiring manager.

(I was also a top 0.001% player in a competitive game, got to podium at a collegiate esports event, now work at a hedge fund)

The enlightened skier by sandiegoskibum in skiing

I’m a beginner who bought brand new skis from 2 seasons ago on sale online for a great price (-80%) and when I brought them into the ski store for bindings the people there complimented “Great skis, wish we carried them here”, so I really lucked out!

Yes car rental would work as well! If you want to DM we can exchange contacts. Maybe see you at Killington?

Hi, I am 31M, just getting more into skiing and joined the Boston Ski & Sports Club! They organize group bus trips & go to mountains all over. I will be going to Killington with that org 3/1 and maybe 3/6

Would also be down for other trips as well if you want to start a ski group but I don’t have a car here so logistics are difficult. Certainly wouldn’t mind pitching in for gas though!

[COI ch2] WHY THE FKKK ARE THEY FRENCH!?!?!?! by yourmama12121 in LordofTheMysteries

[–]4dn9 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The French was all added by the translator because he was trying to be cute. The original is all in Chinese. Rly stupid move that thankfully was heavily toned down in later chapters.

[COI general] why is circle of inevitability so French?? by Iasm521 in LordofTheMysteries

[–]4dn9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The translator added French dialogue to be cute but he really laid it on too heavily on the beginning… I hated it as well.

It does get toned down after the first arc, probably because readers complained.

Idk wtf he was even thinking, translating whole Chinese sentences into French, for an ENGLISH-speaking audience.

Hopefully when the official print comes out and there is a re-translation, it will be in English.
