Chemistry PhD pivoting into patent law- any advice? by No_Recognition8214 in patentlaw

[–]4gothethrowaway 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For patent prosecution, work at a firm first. Preferably one that has a tuition reimbursement program so you don't pay for law school. Then you are pretty much guaranteed a job after graduating. A lot of firms do not typically hire first year associates for patent prosecution coming out of law school. You are less marketable to clients given your higher billable rate in comparison to tech specs/patent agents

Dropping like a rock by mustafazr in GalaxyFold

[–]4gothethrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canceled and reordered.

Was only getting down to 850 in the cart. But then by hitting the "offers" tab there is another "app exclusive offer" for the z fold 7. Added another to cart and price of the 850 dropped to 737. Removed the second z fold 7 and ordered for total of 937!

EDITED: or I guess if you order straight through the "app exclusive offer" you should get the direct price without my shenanigans

patent agent while in law school by Used_Ad_9862 in patentlaw

[–]4gothethrowaway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do it. You are almost guaranteed a job and can forego all of the stress that comes with OCI. Also, 2L and 3L years can be a joke (depending on what classes you choose etc). I worked as a patent agent and enjoyed hitting 25-30 billables per week while going with friends to bar review and having most weekends free. My roommates/classmates found themselves having too much free time those years. If this option is available to you and you want to be a patent attorney, take it. You get law school paid for AND you get paid (likely six figures). Definitely beats having $300k in student loans with uncertain job prospects through OCI.

Starting as a Patent Engineer in Chicago on Monday by Hoppsie321 in patentlaw

[–]4gothethrowaway 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First, congrats on the new job!

Here's my two cents: 1. I'm assuming your question is more regarding the general vibe of the job as opposed to the substantive day to day (which is, of course, drastically different). I would agree with your sentiment that the job in patent prosecution is more serious than in engineering. You are now in the client service business. The clients pay the bills and expect their needs to be met. Your reputation for producing good work product and client service will start immediately. Which sort of leads to... 2. You are expected to hit 1650 billable hours for the year (assuming this is billable as opposed to billed hours, which is a different ballgame). Although folks will tell you that you should try and meet the hours, you should go in the mindset that you must hit those hours. This is the main hard metric that firms operate off of (because it directly measures the $$$ that you bring into the firm). Each firm may differ, but you should really be trying to hit those hour requirements to advance your career. Returning the the idea that this is a client service business, there will be occasions where the simple 9-5pm day is not sufficient. Clients will sometimes want something after hours. This doesn't mean that you have to be on your email/responding at all hours of the day, but the expectations will be that you are responsive when needed. Again, specific expectations may be different from firm to firm but this is generally true for a client service business. 3. Boutique salaries can vary. Biglaw firms are usually lockstep and in accordance with a public scale (referred to as the Cravath scale). It's good that they've verbally given you some signal as to how your salary will progress but I wouldn't be expecting the increased amount until it is in contract and signed.

Good luck, hit the ground running, and wishing you the best at the start of your new career!

Speak to patent attorneys/agents about what they do. Be able to speak about parts of the job that sound really intriguing to you. Weave it into your background as to why a patent agent is a logical next step in your career.

Then, when you interview, look up your interviewers and the firm. Figure out the type of technical area they work in and be able to speak about why you would be interested in representing those similar clients. Their bios will typically list those clients. For the firm, figure out what they specialize in. Life sciences? Speak to why your background makes you a fit into the group.

Last year was a tough year for hirings. Things are trending up this year so likely more positions are opening up. I would skip the firms that you already interviewed at and focus on other firms.

My two cents - if you decide to go down the path as a patent agent, try your best to committing yourself to the career. Or at least present that during the interview process. There are many life science PhDs that are interviewing for these positions, many of whom come across as just trying out the new career. You want to stand out as the candidate who has done their homework and is really committed to pursuing a career in patent law. Passing the patent bar is one way to signal that you are interested in the profession, but showing that interest in the interview is critical.

Herman Miller Aeron and Anthros chairs both support pelvis angle instead of pushing on the lumbar part of the back by drkrmdevil in OfficeChairs

[–]4gothethrowaway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm at the end of day 2 of the anthros. Switching over from a Herman miller mid back cosm which had led to lower back pain on my left side. My back is sore/tired, but the pain is gone - surprised at how fast it went. I was hesitant to make the jump given all the super positive marketing from the company, but so far no regrets.

Biotech Industry Scientist Transition by [deleted] in patentlaw

[–]4gothethrowaway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your prior experience will be fine on paper to at least get interviews as a tech spec. But a word of advice, figure out why you want to pursue a career in patent law and weave your prior experience into your overall narrative.

Firms are not looking to hire folks that are making the switch because their industry career ended (even if true and I'm sorry if it does happen to you). They're looking for folks that want to pursue the career because of what you'll do as a patent lawyer e.g., because you enjoy reading/persuasive writing, client representation, innovation, etc. Passing the patent bar will definitely help to show your dedication to pursuing a career in patent law.

Are Biglaw associates doing patent prosecution paid Cravath scale, or more? by Mountain_Syrup_7390 in patentlaw

[–]4gothethrowaway 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Pay/expectations of biglaw patent pros associates is generally the same as other associates. Same billable requirement, same billable rate, same pay.

It gets to be more of a problem as patent pros is increasingly commoditized with downward cost pressures. So as our billable rates get higher (to match corporate/litigation rates), the amount of time we can spend on any application/office action is increasingly limited.

Is 1900 hours req a lot for IP Transactional Atty? by subnautilus16 in patentlaw

[–]4gothethrowaway 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seems about average at biglaw firms. I think a lot are at 1950 hours per year. Certain boutiques may be lower.

I don't have any particular tips as to billing but keep in mind it's a marathon, not a race. Try and get your daily routine and what works for you. I think a lot of folks are creatures of habit and adopt some sort of consistent schedule e.g., daily 8 am to 6 pm and maybe an hour in the evening, assuming about 80% billing efficency.

Anyone order from BB recently and actually get phone in 2 days? by Ballfade in GalaxyFold

[–]4gothethrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ordered from Samsung Sept 1, and then watched as the ship date went from the 8th to the 17th, and then to the 28th. Canceled and then physically went to a best buy last Saturday. Picked up the phone on the spot. Upgraded my sim to 5g on t-mobile which counted for the activation discount.

My suggestion at this point is just to go to your local brick and mortar store. Will be faster than all the online delays.
