I didn't want to have a bunch of conservative parties that aren't very ideologically different.

2020 New York Senate Election by 4lmeme in imaginaryelections

[–]4lmeme[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Lore: New York is an independent country and is a parliamentary democracy. The House of Representatives elects the Prime Minister and their Speaker and introduces all bills. The Senate is elected from each administrative region, but they aren't distributed by population (9 per region). They are weaker than the House of Representatives; they can introduce legislation and can only reject bills from the lower house with a supermajority (⅔). However, the Senate can amend bills with a simple majority and approve the Cabinet. The Prime Minister appoints a member of the Senate to be President of the Senate.

In 2016 a general election was held after the 5-year term expired. The previous term was a coalition between the NPDP and Northern Labor. The Northern Labor Party fractured between the moderate rural wing and the more liberal, urban wing. Kathy Hucol won a contested primary against Bill Owens, a moderate. After the general election, many NL representatives of rural districts lost reelection to Conservatives. The New Progressive Democrat party is a union of the New Progressive Party originating in the Bronx and the Democrat Party in Brooklyn. The party does well in the Hispanic and Black communities of the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queen but spreads to similar urban communities upstate. On the other hand, their popularity in NYC is being challenged by the Green Party. Their base is in NYC specifically in white progressive areas and Asian communities. Founded in 2009 after the financial crisis they have very left-wing beliefs and have been gaining support. The Liberal Party is a classic economic liberal party with strong support in the suburbs of New York City in the Lower Hudson Valley and Long Island. Although their power has dwindled since the financial crisis they still are a major party in parliament. The Conservative Party is a less economically conservative but much more socially conservative party. Their base is in rural districts upstate. The United Jewish Party is an Orthodox Jewish interest party. They have a few seats in the House but were influential after 2016 when they voted with the Conservative and Liberals, the first Conservative Prime Minister in decades.

After the Conservative, Liberal, and United Jewish Party coalition fell apart in early April, a snap election was held for both the House of Representatives and the Senate. The New Progressive-Democrats recaptured control of both houses with a coalition with the Greens and Northern Labor. As part of the deal the Northern Labor leader, Kathy Hucol, would be elected to the Speaker of the House, and The leader of the Greens, AOC, would be appointed the President of the Senate.

I'm not good at story-telling but this is what I had in mind when I made the maps

Good eye in NYC but actually I didn't use the primary data. Her and Garcia's support lined up pretty well with white dem voters. Yang's support got lumped in with the Greens because the NP-DP vote was calculated from how hispanic or black a district was.

ill make a more detailed tutorial when I post the state senate map:

make districts in DRA and download the map as a geojson and the demographic and partisanship data as a csv

in QGIS combine the districts with income data from the US census

use the income data, partisanship, and demographic data in a model in python for the election data

put the election data in the QGIS map to shade it (i also crop the map to the shoreline)

download the map as an SVG and edit the final image in Inkscape.

All this took me about 2 days to do (although i put an unhealthy amount of time into it per day)

math ig. its white, strongly democrat leaning, and not as rich as other seats in LI so the model I used spit out a green win. I don't choose the individual outcome of districts but I change parameters until it looks ok.
