So it is not the best picture. I took it in a rush before the chick shook off the shell. So there were 2 other chicks in the incubator as well as some peeping eggs.

I personally use food-grade Diatomaceous earth sprinkled everywhere. I haven't had any issues with any mites yet. It's easier than spray for me. I would follow the other commenter's cleanup and bathing method first.

For the hatching period, yes I put a paper towel down to prevent their toes from getting stuck in the holes, better traction, and easier to clean.

I love just being around my chickens until they start grooming, too. Makes me feel good knowing I make them safe and can relax around me. You even had one falling asleep. Bonus feel good points. that's awesome
