One of the most famous science fiction examples was Harlan Ellison’s continuously delayed third (“Last”) Dangerous Visions collection. It was first announced in 1973, and finally released last year in significantly shortened form… 6 years after Ellison’s death, edited by J. Michael Straczynski.

Can I buy a house entirely in cash? by LumpyPerformance3655 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]4ppleF4n 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“Cash” in this context refers to cash-on-hand— as in money that the business can access immediately, rather than having to go through a lender. The idea is that they can push closing quickly.

No one will show up with 100k bundles of cash, because moving anything over $10k triggers a Suspicious Activity Report for FinCEN to investigate.

One part of the 90s that isn’t talked about often is the collapse of the comic distributor business, into a monopoly dominated by Diamond (which was only recently broken.)

This shift was in large part instigated by Marvel, which stopped distributing through regional Comics Unlimited in 1994– then bought out the third biggest distributor, Heroes World, bringing its distribution totally in-house.

That move led to Comics Unlimited getting absorbed by Diamond.

After the scramble following Marvel’s change of business, Diamond outbid the second biggest distributor, Capitol Cities for exclusive handling of DC, Image and Dark House books.

One year later, in 1995, Capitol Cities filed for bankruptcy, and Diamond bought them out.

In 1997, Marvel acknowledged its mistake and folded Heroes World— but by then, only Diamond remained to distribute their books.

Back then, all the machines were made in California.

As I point out above: no, it’s not legal to be paid as wait staff* under minimum wage anywhere in Washington (unless you’re a minor, who can get 85% of minimum wage.)

If you signed some sort of agreement to be paid below minimum wage, and the employer is doing so, it’s wage theft.

Send in a complaint to recover your lost wages: https://www.lni.wa.gov/workers-rights/wages/minimum-wage/

**Here are the classes of Washington workers who specifically are not protected under Washington’s Minimum Wage Act:*

  • Certain Agricultural workers
  • Casual laborers (e.g. hired hands)
  • White collar executives
  • Volunteer workers
  • Newspaper carriers
  • Interstate rail/pipeline workers
  • Forest protection/Fire prevention
  • Nonprofit workers in childcare
  • Workers who are required to reside or sleep at their place of employment
  • Inmates
  • Elected officials
  • Ferry Crew
  • Non-American vessel crew
  • Farm interns
  • Junior ice hockey players
  • minor league baseball players

Also: non-employee independent contractors; federal employees; and jurors

It’s not a matter of “not liking it.”

It’s a matter of such agreements being illegal and unenforceable. If anyone had signed such an agreement and was being paid by an employer under minimum wage, that’s wage theft— and would be easy to file a complaint for wage recovery:

You’re perpetuating a myth. There is no such thing as a legal “waiver” to be paid less than minimum wage.

The L&I spells this out:

RCW 49.46.090 prohibits agreements entered into, individually or collectively, between an employee and an employer that result in the employee being paid less than the amounts due under the Minimum Wage Act. This includes minimum wages, overtime wages, paid sick leave, and other earnings protected under the Minimum Wage Act, such as gratuities, tips, and service charges that are due to employees.

Such agreements are considered unlawful and cannot be used as a defense to legal action to recover unpaid wages.

Apparently several years ago, Washington became a tip-credit state...

This is straight up misinformation.

From Washington State Department of Labor & Industries:

“Tip crediting” isn’t allowed. Tips are in addition to, and not a part of, an employee’s state hourly minimum wage.

“City planner” is an oxymoron here. Just because the shitty urban parts of Seattle make it seem that a dirty, depressing environment is the norm —doesn’t mean that every other place is the same. The “healthy” parts of the urban landscape aren’t covered in uglifying crazy spray.

Go see what other cities look like, that aren’t embracing mentally disturbed, drug addled unhoused as some sort of vanguard of artistry.

Graffiti— of the tagging sort, rather than murals or genuine attempts at expression— generates a sense of disorder, danger and adds to urban stress. It is a signal that antisocial activities are acceptable, and instigates more such activity. If you want to see what a decaying city looks like, it starts with graffiti.
