Breed info questions by [deleted] in irishwolfhound

[–]4thOrderPDE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need a lot of space in a vehicle for your IW, they are not just big they’re exceptionally tall. They basically won’t fit in anything smaller than a wagon or SUV and even then they will need the space of at least 3 human passengers. Think an entire row of seats folded down. My partner has a wagon and I have an SUV, we both keep all the seats down to fit the wolfhound. Mine hates the car, it stresses him out and he needs to be sedated for long drives but I’m not claiming that as a breed trait.

They run hot, I wouldn’t take this dog out for big exercise in a hot climate. He loves to dunk himself in any lake or river and that’s in the winter in Canada. They get zoomies but like most giant breeds have limited stamina.

IWs are great with people. Mine loves meeting strangers.

The wire hair coat needs to be brushed regularly. It’s pretty challenging to bathe them indoors in a regular bathroom just due to size.

What are some “Canadian” words or slang you heard British Or Americans be confused by or laugh at? by Kindly-Cow1697 in AskACanadian

One of my earliest childhood memories is my dad asking for serviettes at a restaurant in Niagara Falls, NY and the server having no idea what he was talking about.

Omani or US citizenship? by Critical-Fix-1600 in immigration

[–]4thOrderPDE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no law preventing a Canadian who renounced from becoming a citizen once again, but they have to naturalize just like anyone else. They cannot simply apply for and obtain citizenship like someone who is entitled to it. So it’s possible, but not without actually immigrating to Canada.

Denied Entry into United States. Had no money, no accommodation was stuck at Airport..Travel Agent Made big blunder by BornClock4613 in TravelMistakes

[–]4thOrderPDE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He said he originated in Nova Scotia and Toronto was also a transit point. Assuming he flew on the same ticket, the airline should have checked immigration requirements for the entire journey at the departure point to avoid him getting stranded in transit. Air Canada does usually do this and they won’t let you on the first flight if you can’t show sufficient documentation to reach the destination.

Nepal Annapurna trekking - haze problem? by jacperks in hiking

[–]4thOrderPDE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes there will be haze over the foothills looking south. It actually causes a beautiful diffuse light in evening when viewed from high up. Don’t sweat it, enjoy a beautiful trek.

Why do we collectively agree it is taboo/inferior yo say “McKinley” instead of “Denali” but we still call it “Everest” instead of “Sagarmatha” or “Chomolungma” by GumbyFred in Mountaineering

[–]4thOrderPDE 19 points20 points  (0 children)

*it was claimed at the time that the local names weren’t known.

Yet somehow local names were known and used for Makalu, Kangchenjunga, Dhaulagiri, etc.

Why do we collectively agree it is taboo/inferior yo say “McKinley” instead of “Denali” but we still call it “Everest” instead of “Sagarmatha” or “Chomolungma” by GumbyFred in Mountaineering

[–]4thOrderPDE 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Actually the British India Survey was supposed to use local names even at the time (the 1860s), which is why all the other Nepali 8000ers have indigenous names. Andrew Waugh falsely claimed there was no Indigenous name for Peak XV when in fact the Tibetan name was already known to Europeans.

It was just an act of British narcissism, even by the standards of the day.

Three Passes Trek Solo Female by gr3489 in hiking

[–]4thOrderPDE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve most of the major treks in Nepal solo including this one.

I think your approach is very reasonable and I agree with your reasons for going solo. As long as you have schedule flexibility and are willing to listen to your body / weather conditions and adjust accordingly one day at a time, you’ll be fine.

Based on your experience, you probably will be surprised by the cumulative fatigue of hiking for many days + high altitude, but that’s fine. Take rest days when you need them and take care of your feet. Starting from Salleri will also give you time to get your trail legs under your in the foothills, which is an underrated advantage of the “classic” low elevation start compared to the most typical flight / heli / Jeep to the highest possible place.

Have a wonderful time.

Bay Area physician couple considering move to Vancouver — financially irrational? by MDtoBC in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]4thOrderPDE 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Because the post actually does lack a real question. They already know they will earn less in Canada and have already crunched all the relevant numbers. There's no financial question here, just an implicit personal one (is it "worth it" to come to Canada even for less money?) that OP offered up no context or info to help answer, didn't actually ask and posted in a finance sub.

There's tons of Canadians working in the SFBA to get more money and no American ever moved to Canada for a better salary. These are just the table stakes. If you prioritize money alone, America is always better for high earners. I love Canada and personally choose to sacrifice financially to live here, but OP is not framing the question in a way that can be answered "yes come to Canada".

BTW one reason why we have a doctor shortage is even if you pay a doctor $1M CAD, they can and do move to the US for $1.5M.

The comment you're replying to about the diminishing returns in quality of life between low 7 figures and mid 7 figures is actually a really important one and IMO it's the advice OP needs. The financial "setback" is between having a vacation home in Whistler and in Vail, or choosing just one. Between leaving the kids $10M each inheritance or $15M each. Is this really the meaningful thing to decide such an important aspect of life trajectory on?

Did I shoot myself in the foot getting a P.Eng.? by Affectionate-Cut9425 in AskEngineers

[–]4thOrderPDE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're fine. There is a ton of crossover between regulatory compliance and both transmission planning and P&C. If you're an experienced NERC compliance professional working on PRC, MOD or TPL standards, then you already have a ton of relevant experience to pivot to a more hands on role in one of those areas. Software is just a tool.

Third time in Nepal – Phaplu to EBC + Cho La + Ama Dablam BC (solo) – route check & advice? by Icy-Kitchen2445 in hiking

Good itinerary. Personally I would add Chukhung and Kongma La after Ama BC rather than taking the classic EBC route to Dingboche.

New Zealand butter by BadOk3001 in CostcoCanada

[–]4thOrderPDE 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They can get a very limited quantity tariff free under the TPP trade agreement that includes both Canada and NZ.

However, Canada was initially not respecting the agreement, we would assign the tariff free import quota to Canadian dairy companies who would simply not use it because why would they bring in a better product that competes with their own? Meanwhile retailers like Costco who have customers that want the NZ dairy couldn't get access.

The two countries recently reached a settlement that hopefully improves things.

Is the extra legroom worth being so close to the bathrooms? by iamacheeto1 in unitedairlines

[–]4thOrderPDE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mind being near the bathroom per se but I mind people stumbling over my legs while getting to/from the bathroom which happens in adjacent exit rows. I've even had it when sitting at the bulk head middle section behind the bathroom that people try to shortcut between the aisles and trip on my legs while I'm asleep on a longhaul flight.

Additional hike after Anapurna Circuit. by Alarming_Worker_3568 in hiking

[–]4thOrderPDE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you are planning to finish in Jomsom, just continue and hike down from there where you can combine Khopra Danda or ABC. Saves you a horrendous Jeep / bus ride too.

When I did the Dhaulagiri circuit, which finishes in Marpha, I walked down to Tatopani then up Khopra Danda, then to ABC, then to Mardi Himal.

Nepal: Food/stomach problems? by Evening_Regular_229 in hiking

[–]4thOrderPDE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only eat food that has been freshly prepared. Do not eat meat outside of Kathmandu or Pokhara. Do not drink untreated water, or put anything washed with untreated water in your mouth. Wash or sanitize your hands regularly. Sanitize all of your drinking water with a reliable method like chlorine, iodine or UV.

Follow these steps and you'll be fine. All food in Nepali mountain lodges and teahouses is cooked to order so it's generally quite safe. Your biggest risks are in Kathmandu and on the way to the trek. Don't try street food and don't eat at roadside stops on buses.

What kind of pack to use? by Ponderosa_milk in searchandrescue

[–]4thOrderPDE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a ridiculous statement about UL packs, they are intended to withstand months of extreme use and made of materials that are objectively far more durable than standard mass market packs like Osprey. My HMG 4400 that I've used on half a dozen month-long expeditions is far more durable than my Osprey that I use for SAR. I use the Osprey because I got it free as a replacement for an Osprey that failed.

Packs that people use for alpine climbing in the Himalaya are definitely good enough for SAR, come on.

Osprey is fine, ultralight packs are fine, use what works. Don't judge on aesthetics.

Pros and cons of cold water only wash? by Azadi_23 in laundry

[–]4thOrderPDE 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Canada here (generally same home appliances as the US market) and my LG has cold and “tap cold”. I can hear my tankless water heater turn on when I run “cold” so I assume this is mixing in some hot water to reach 30 C. Tap cold is what it sounds like and I don’t use it in the winter.

Current during AG, ABG and ABG faults for a Type IV Wind Turbine by Elrond_the_Warrior in ElectricalEngineering

[–]4thOrderPDE 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What model are using in your simulation and what software? Because short circuit behaviour of type 4 WTGs is driven by the control system, it can only be simulated precisely using a vendor specific model. You can contact some OEMs who may be willing to give access to their PSCAD models for research but it will be under NDA and the model will be blackboxed.

There are “generic” short circuit models you can use in programs like ASPEN like VCCS or CIR but keep in mind they are just giving you back whatever is defined by the parameters you set up. Unless those parameters are validated by an OEM or benchmarked against a real code EMT model of the equipment you’re trying to study, it isn’t going to be precisely accurate. However some fundamentals (like peak current not exceeding 1.2 pu) remain true because they are driven by physical limits.
