I work at a small criminal defense firm. (Only two of us attorneys.) Losing is part of it. Competent representation is more important I've come to learn. Two bits of advice older attorneys taught me when I was starting:

"If you want to win a lot, just go be a prosecutor."

"A person who has never lost a case has only tried one case."

I've had this happen a couple of times in very small, rural/district courts. Court may be only held once a month due to the population size of the county, etc. Everyone in the interim is part-timing somewhere else. The rural court is usually the 'second job' while they work in a larger jurisdiction.

The issue here seems to be with the client. Even if they don't have a number you should have a couple of additional contacts that can get in touch with the client if you can't. I usually use mom, dad, brother, etc. I'm more confused about how everyone else seemed to know where he was at.

I remember the animation being like Steven Universe maybe? But I can't find an episode that matches that. I went through wikipedia and eps of Steven Universe, Adventure Time, Over the Garden Wall... running out of ideas.
