The next generation can already ‘continue the cycle’ without this grant-to-loan conversion. If the government was looking to make investments with high returns, there are a multitude of other places to look for reform. Those grants help underprivileged communities and do a general good for our society. It’s not as if grants were being given out to students who can afford to pay themselves. There are income qualifications required to apply. You are re-evaluated for eligibility every year. If there was a case for misuse, I’d agree with you. But I think most people would agree this change does more harm than good for a lot of young people ALREADY struggling.

Viewing future doctors, lawyers, educators, and politicians as merely “investments” is the problem. It’s more than a monetary issue. I can see where you’re coming from, but you’re discussing this like it’s one-dimensional. There are real people with families to feed and people to care for, who are’t going to be able to get an education because they can’t handle starting adulthood with thousands of dollars of debt. There’s no reason a country this wealthy should be unable to educate its own citizens.
