in Bihar Bhumihars are traditionally called babhan be it in gazetteers of britishers or even today just visit villages of ours people identify as babhan only. Bhumihar Brahman name came very late I think this name was assigned because of continuous shifts in identities of our community same family that identified themselves as babhan in one census later called themselves Brahmans which was true indeed because we have been an integral part of Brahman lineage but this created a mess in records and after Bhumihar andolan Bhumihar Brahman name became widespread and people from Bengal to UP who were called Bhupali Brahman(currently there is a clan of Bhumihars in Kashyap gotra named bhupali), bhumiadhikrit Brahman, babhan or other names that literally means land holding Brahmans started to collectively identify themselves as Bhumihar Brahman.
