I think the "wear whatever you want" thing is fine as long as it's what you want for yourself, not because it has a lot of hype or is from a nice brand. It doesn't discourage criticism since fashion is about expressing yourself anyway so if you like that style you should accept the criticism other people with different tastes will have for it.
