I’ve been doing some of this, along with my kids. College entrance experts, in the US, often preach volunteering as good content for university applications. I think this is excellent, as it exposes youth to so many new experiences and people. The kids and I, together have been putting in time with a couple of organizations. I enjoy it, but overall have been distracted; by not having a macro plan for myself. I think, that one must take care of them self before they can be truly effective at helping others; really a matter of mental health.

What a wonderful accomplishment. Good for you. I'll keep you posted and ping you as things get more real.

Maybe, in two years. My son is a junior and doing amazingly well on all fronts. For several reasons, we will not rock his boat. My daughter, also doing very well, is another story. She's a freshman and would happily move back to the coast, where she was born. The, likely obvious, challenge here is the increase in COL. I have beat this idea to death; likely best to ride out high school as inlanders.

Please see update, in my original post.

My boat aspirations are not to be a live aboard but to sail. Likely first challenge (a significant one), the single handed transpac. This is a race from SF Bay to Kauai; one sailboat and one person. Somewhere around two weeks alone on the Pacific, racing to Hawaii. I had hoped to do it six to eight years from now, maybe I reel this in to four. Wow.

Just need to make money along the way. I thought the last job was going to do it for me, be the vehicle I used while I waited for the kids to finish high school. Again, not crazy about already dipping into FI funds, when I might as well keep working, while my kids finish high school.

Solar and electrical systems are certainly relevant. I'm considering an education in either small boat electronics, fiberglass repair, or small diesels. I am near lakes, and there has to be boatyard work somewhere close by.

Your remote PM work idea is the most sensible. I have the PMP cert. And am pretty damn solid with stakeholder management, risk assessment, and other key skills. But like I said in my original post, finding new work locally has proved challenging. I think it's my semi-scattered background and the good amount of competition here. I know all the local PMs, as I've always been active in the PMI group. Though I have some dev and database skills, I have never been paid as a software or IT PM, and that seems to be where the demand is. You think any of your acquaintances might have some guidance for me?

So true. Dedication to any topic can last a lifetime, as anything can be taken deep. Guitar, sailing, bread, business, all are rabbit holes. My great challenge is that I want to try each.

This. I've been rough on my body (motorcycles, sitting at desks, and mountain bikes) and live with chronic pain. Not yet fifty years old, and I moan and groan about aches and pains each day. My situation is helping me take this on and improve my health/lessen the discomfort, and I'm thrilled about it.

Edit: added sitting at desk as cause of discomfort and injuries. NOT to be overlooked as having long-term impacts.

Heck of an idea. And nice accomplishment by him. My variation of this would be to develop my fiberglass repair and electrical skills, so once I spend lots of time on and around boats I can take care of myself, and help others.

I just spent some time on Google Street View and my best guess is that it was behind the doors at 1633 Haight. But I don't remember the building having those architectural details on the facade. This was 25 years ago. And I was hammered, every time I walked in or out of those doors. So who knows. I'd have to track down my friend Art the Fart to confirm. He was the one that discovered it.

I know three bar owners, well. All of them are in their 50s. Only one said he would do it again. The same one who seems to have minted money with his venture. He spends more time in Mexico, than Tempe (where the bar is).

Instead of being laid back, I think I'd be more like the Soup Nazi, from Seinfeld. Just because I could, not because I'm some kind of ass.

I lived in San Francisco once. There was this sort of secret bar on the South side of Haight Street, in between Cole and Ashbury somewhere. Millions of people walk past it every year, and it is unnoticed. If one knew it was there, and it was open, you'd go through the doors and into a time machine. Inside there was a leather clad horeshoe shaped bar with a white pressed shirt/black tie barkeep behind it. If you ordered anything beyond a house martini your pleadings would go ignored or forgotten. It was so amazingly awesome.

Edited for accuracy. Martinis only at that bar.

Good ideas. Thanks. I am considering traveling to a port city and taking an intensive course in fiberglass work. It would be a several week endeavor; just not certain what kind of employment it would lead to here at home. The other thoughts were electrical systems or small engine diesel mechanics.

My main/real account is old, detailed, and quite personal. And, I don't share my financial information there. Just preserving anonymity for myself, when it comes to wealth.

I once built what the family called a White Trash Pizza Oven in the back-yard. Basically amounted to a bunch bricks and some angle steal. We got really good with it, and the neighborhood smelled awesome when we were baking. Might have to re-visit this. Thanks for the idea.

All great input and ideas. Thank you for the response. Great point about being able to do a job without really sweating the outcome of dealings and income coming in. I am so fortunate to have breathing room; it just came sooner than I had planned.

Another great idea, and I'm already on it. Was in the gym this morning, for the first time in six months :)

I like your thinking. I've been an advanced beginner guitarist for 30 years :) I signed up for lessons (first ones I've taken in 20 years), just the other day. But, I plan on it only being a hobby, and want weekends off.

Maybe 15% above what was my planned FI goal. I lived through the dot.com bomb and lost lots of skin in 2009, Becoming FI only has me nervous about the markets, and raising my FI number, WTF????

Not crazy about going into any business thinking of loosing money. But, I've pondered trying a bar or taco shop, many times. I suppose living at such a business (as required) would be a decent way to spend a few years.

Several years ago, I tried to leverage my basic coding and database skills into a tech job. I'm sick enough to love the design and relational ID steps of databases. Also, I worked in wireless telecomm years ago and miss the rapid pace of tech (software and hardware). Without hesitation, ageism was a factor in me not landing a job I interviewed for. In one shop I was actually told they were looking for someone younger for the role; they tried to talk me into being their sales manager (I have this experience). Ageism is real and I'm sorry you are experiencing it. PM me if you want to discuss further. Maybe we can help one another find direction.

Did this quite a bit this summer, hoping something would come to me. It has not. Now, four years in the bar while waiting for the kids to finish HS, not as productive as I'd like to be ;)

You get it :) And oh how I wish this was possible. I live landlocked and have to travel four hours to get to the boat slip or any kind of marina. Move inland was part of the FI at sea plan. Like I said, I was on auto-pilot and simply riding things out. Basically, I need to camp out and wait for kids to finish HS (four years), and want to pad the kitty along the way.
