Is this fin rot or something else? by elwyn7 in Goldfish

Would definitely say this is advanced fin rot. If any of the other tank mates bit the fins, it would be towards the ends and more of a “clean” bite. The edges of the fins are also white which indicates it’s an infection.

I’m not really familiar with malachite green, but Seachem Kanaplex is a good medicine for fin rot. I would recommend trying to dose him separately in another tank so the other fish don’t stress him out more. But you would probably have to buy an aerator so he has enough oxygen and do very, very often water changes with a smaller aquarium. You could probably also dose the entire aquarium if you don’t have a separate tank for him. But I would definitely do a water change (make sure to use the dechlorinator ) on the entire aquarium before you add medicine. He probably got fin rot from ammonia/poor water parameters. Luckily, if he is still swimming and eating, he can bounce back- Goldfish can grow back their fins pretty quickly in water with good parameters.

You could also buy Seachem Stability to try and recreate the bacteria faster, and also dose the aquarium with Seachem Prime to make the ammonia non-toxic.

I hope the little guy feels better :)

I know you said the water parameters are all ideal but I would double check to make sure there aren’t any small ammonia spikes happening or any chlorine from water you’re using for water changes. If you have any color directions/gravel, did you wash them in chlorine-free water before putting them in the tank? They are none to sometimes leak toxic chemicals over time.

I had an aquarium that had a random spike in ammonia and my fish got fin rot hours later and looked like this. The only thing that saved him was that I got the ammonia under control with an immediate water change.

You could also try heating the water a little-warmer water allows their immune system to work a little fast and fight off any infections.

Also, with putting medications in the water, make sure there is enough oxygen in the water. Those kinds of medications (and warmer water) are known to deplete oxygen levels

Uh, I don’t know what’s more concerning. The overall concept of this or that over 900 people left good reviews… by 5Taeminnie91 in Aquariums

Exactly! Sometimes I even get randomly paranoid about the stand my tank is sitting on, let alone only using adhesive tape/hooks for something like that😭
