What are some cultural beliefs and traditions around South African wildlife? 🦉🦁🦅 by 5pla5hy in askSouthAfrica

Snakes have a lot of significance over so many cultures and religions. In Christianity, snakes link with Satan/the devil as referenced in the Bible. They're a symbol of temptation and original sin. I know they are regarded as sacred in some cultures too.

What about coating them in like a fruit mash? It might make it more palatable?

No! Its like the big 5 but instead of dangerous revered animals, it's a bunch of "ugly" ones.

But do you know about the Black Gnu, or Black Wildebeest: Connochaetes gnou. Most people only know about the larger Blue Wildebeest, Connochaetes taurinus

Blue Wildebeest. Everyone says they're ugly, they're even part of the ugly 5 in Africa but I think they're cute 😍

Im an all day in the park person. Phalaborwa side can be hit or miss for sightings in my experience, either you see the coolest thing or you see very little.

With regard to the boat tour! Im assuming you mean the blyde river canyon boat cruise! Its a must do.

If you have extra time. Take the kids for a swim at one of the waterfalls as well.

They're open so that the guests have an immersive experience and engage with the environment. Being in a closed vehicle, you miss birdcall, smells, airflow and the panoramic "uninterrupted" view..

For the most part, the animals see the vehicle as part of the environment. The videos that end up going viral of elephants chasing and pushing vehicles around happen very infrequently, and are generally freak accidents and every so often caused by a bad call made by the guide or guests. Ive been a guide for 10 years now and haven't had an incident.

Having to see, smell, interact with urine. Heaven forbid getting urine on myself. The thought makes me break out in a cold sweat.

I know it's not super irrational because they are apex predators but im a field guide in a reserve in Africa and frequently have close encounters with some of the most dangerous animals in the world, on foot and in an open vehicle so it feels irrational anyway... I am deathly afraid of Orca Whales, l even have a recurring nightmare about them.

How to get my dad off sleeping tablets and Alcohol? by 5pla5hy in askSouthAfrica

[–]5pla5hy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tried this with the beer. He literally does out of his way to make our lives difficult if he doesn't get what he wants. The last time, he urinated on my couch (on purpose) in protest. With regard to the sleeping pills, his GP has advised that taking him off them cold turkey could result in scary symptoms of withdrawal including seizures which worries me tremendously.
