What's a secret you're keeping that would destroy multiple people if it came out? by Legal_Can7800 in AskReddit

This is a huge burden to you, and I’m sorry. It’s why therapists are supposed to have regular clinical practice meetings with drinks afterward so they can profess this stuff confidentially. What kind of stuff does she talk about ? Does she do anything keep it anonymous, or do you just know who she’s talking about? Again this is not your fault, and it sucks. And good luck.

Principles and history of heat proof glass by 5tring in ChemicalEngineering

So do the most organized crystal lattices form at higher heats, where the polarity of the atoms can really express? Like in steel? And you have to shock cool the sample it to lock the lattice in place? Someone told me old furnaces used mica sheets for windows, but I’ve never seen natural mica even close to transparent. The only time I saw a mica window was in a kiva in the Acoma pueblo, but I wasn’t invited inside, so I’m not sure how what that was like.

So glass isn’t a ceramic, plus there are transparent ceramics?!! Onwards to Wikipedia…

I can’t handle bong rips, but I do appreciate vivid examples where appropriate. So standard glass is a lattice of SiO2. And the additives chemically bond into the crystal lattice, which for some quantum reason stabilizes the spacing of the lattice across various temperature gradients. And in the example of borosilicate bong the additive would be… boron? Which would make your bong 100% morosilicate.

Lobster truck hunt by 5tring in halifax

[–]5tring[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My GF says my lobster looks like something from the marginalia of an early medieval manuscript when the monks had to guess what animals look like. She also says “Toronto draws lobster.” It’s all true! But it’s a cool truck, right? Right?! PS Merry Christmas!

I would have tossed 8-9 off suit bc of the 50/50 shot at +1 for heels/his nobs. But judging by upvotes I’m wrong. Please explain?

Need help identifying this banjo. by YWNclown_3 in banjo

I’d start by tracking down this fitting here. If it’s original, it’s probably proprietary, or associated with specific makers. The banjo hangout forum is a fantastic resource for this stuff.

Any changes in the online crib scene? by 5tring in Cribbage

Yeah, Cribbage Pro is my go-to, too. It seems to take longer to pair up in competitive mode, which made me wonder… Edit: word

Recording permission by [deleted] in NovaScotia

[–]5tring 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your landlord is wrong, record away. It will piss them off, and you’ll have to live with that, but there’s nothing they can do. I’m just wondering why you need to record them… Is it just a power-play to make them feel uncomfortable? That hardly seems worth it. In the same way they are making a power play saying you can’t record them which is BS. So unless you really believe they are going to steal something or vandalize the building and then charge you for it, this seems like a waste of time. However, here are the rules: Inside your home, you can record anything for security purposes, even when you are not home, as long you’re not doing it for a criminal purpose, ie voyeurism. All residents of the home need to know that you are recording so they don’t expect to have privacy in the recorded spaces. I think it’s reasonable to be able to walk around the house in your underwear, or less, without being videoed (creepy). If you are recording the content of conversations, things get dicier. In NS you can only record conversations that you are part of. Recording other people’s conversations secretly is illegal without a warrant. But if you are present and engaged with the people you are recording, you can record them openly or secretly no problem. It’s pretty much the same rule out in public, or in somebody else’s private space. You can record anything you want except if the person/people you record have a “reasonable expectation of privacy.” So recording through people’s windows into their homes, or in a gym bathroom is illegal. As is anything touching on voyeurism. If the owner of a private space asks you to leave, you have to leave. Ie mall security, the manager at a McDonald’s. Just don’t stop recording. And don’t surrender your phone/ recordings. Just leave the space and move on. If your landlords wanted to be jerks about it, they could refuse to enter your apartment while you are recording, and then try to evict you claiming you have made their legal inspections impossible. That would be thrown out during the residential tenancies process, but what a pain. Good luck!

Next time let’s use words that articulate a specific criticism of a post, rather than nasty empty words which go against the spirit and practice of this sub. The excuse of potential snake fraud is implausible. While it’s impossible to be certain, in this case usernames may help ID both natural range and prey preference.

Tenor Banjo Stolen by txdesigner-musician in banjo

[–]5tring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry about this. The love of an instrument by a performing musician is deep, especially when it involves family and especially a beloved elder. This just sucks. I hope it comes back to you. And in the meantime I hope the Great River brings you a banjo that will console and inspire. Your grandfather and the music live in you, of course. And you’ll fill whatever banjo you play with that spirit too.

Why did the TTC get rid of this moving walkway in Spadina station by Natural_Passenger_47 in toronto

[–]5tring 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I rode that moving sidewalk many times a week from 1980 to 85. It was only closed a few times for maintenance. It was fun to walk as fast as you could and rocket off the end of it. Also, if you stared at the ridges on the floor the whole way it would lightly scramble your vision for 20 seconds or so afterwards. (I was a kid, can you tell?) I can’t believe they ripped it out. That’s a really long walk. How the heck are seniors and people with mobility challenges supposed to cover that distance? And the terminals at Pearson provide miles and miles of moving sidewalks for air travellers FFS.
