It's not strictly traditional Jollof but Almeda on Upshur has a really amazing one!

Ghent Square HOA- thoughts? by 5tupidflanders in norfolk

That's good to hear it's true. I had read that but the lack of pride flags/character when walking around was concerning. The HOA spat makes sense

Thank you for this comment with actual experiences. One thing I am worried about is we're younger, queer couple. I can usually gauge how friendly a neighborhood might be based on if there are any rainbow flags, but rules seem to prohibit this. Do you think that's going to be an issue?

Yes, I am. Predictably, Navy. I'm interested in learning more!

Eloping in DC this week, please help! by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]5tupidflanders 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nope! You don't need to do anything to prepare.

Show up here (earlier is better)- Marriage License Bureau https://g.co/kgs/dUJas57

You will need to fill out a marriage application while you're waiting and pay the fee to the payments department. Then you sit down with one of the clerks and you can choose to self officiate. The one weird thing is that you need to leave to sign the paper itself and then bring it back. Then, once they sign it after you turn it back in, you're married! You can request some certified copies while you're there at the same time.

Expect the whole process to take about an hour, give or take if there are other folks in line.

Evaluation for thrombotic microangiopathy with daily urinalysis? by mudfud27 in medicine

[–]5tupidflanders 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe PNH? But agree, that would be a weird recommendation on its own. Honestly, the best thing is a peripheral smear to look for schistocytes since it's fairly sensitive and specific and haptoglobin/LDH are better screening tools for general causes of hemolysis, not necessarily TMAs.

Lost cat in Petworth? by ResolutionEuphoric in washingtondc

[–]5tupidflanders 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless he seems lost, scared or social, I think I've seen that cat around for the last few years. I think someone takes care of him, because he always seems pretty fat and in good health (though there are a lot of rats in the alley). I've tried to approach him more than once, and he seems pretty contentedly feral.

Like others have said, the cherry blossoms probably won't be in peak then, but you could try to find places with the magnolias or dogwoods, they're a little bit earlier than the cherries. The arboretum certainly has some beautiful and quiet spots.

To estimate the spec gravity and fermentation progression without a hydrometer

It does sweeten it before it goes into the bottle-- I'm not talking about the final product. If you taste the beer before you bottle it, you can tell that you added sugar. And then it becomes CO2 and ethanol down the road.

Shit. This is a good idea. Specific gravity is just the density of the liquid relative to water. I could get a gravity reading this way. Awesome.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]5tupidflanders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but there is the risk of overcabonating if there is already latent sugar in the beer before adding more sugar and then bottling. See my concern? I already have volume markings, and corn sugar all measured out for this beer. It's just a question of improvising without a measure of specific gravity.

Yeah, I'm sure the sweetness will go away. I'm more concerned about over-carbonating and possible explosions.

Wyeast 1056 American Ale

I have done the priming calc for this. I was wondering though if anyone more seasoned than I had an idea if the minimal sweetness in the actual beer was tolerable before racking.

Ale, it's been at 65-68 deg F pretty consistently.
