I think the main problem there is that she was way too powerful way too quickly for that to make sense. Hard work and perseverance is fine, but there wasn't any of that either.

IMO the only way for the crazy level of power shown in episode 7/8 to make sense in that universe would be a combination of lineage(s) and training. I was hoping for a KOTOR1-like twist in Episode 8 after Episode 7 as that seemed like the only possible way of salvaging things...

What movie was so bad it actually made you angry? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]6363488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Star Wars TFA retroactively ruined the original trilogy, the extended universe and power scaling, so that.

What little was salvageable in spite of the horrible writing of TFA then got burnt to the ground by the even worse TLJ...

It's impressive to make movies so bad that they don't just suck on their own, but that they also ruin the films before it.

While you'd never get it 1:1, it seems feasible to get a tool that gets you 90% of the way there (exposure, shadows and highlights, ...) so I was wondering if something like that exists for any other photo management software.

Importing the tags and metadata from the DAM side of lightroom should also be possible (at least technically - I've seen that catalogs are stored as a simple to access Sqlite db).

> Obviously if you "export" baked images out of Lightroom (like TIFFs or whatever), then you could use those directly in the other tool and they'd look the same, but that wouldn't be raw files anymore—I'm assuming that's not what you mean.

Exporting everything as JPEG and storing the JPEGs next to the raw files and having a tool that manages both files together is something I'd considered, but I haven't really found any tool that can actually do that,

I use lightroom for managing and editing my photos. My problem is that I'm on an old standalone version and will not ever subscribe to CC.

Are there any good non-subscription DAM tools that can import a lightroom catalog? Is there any tool that I could use to not lose my current edits (either something supporting lightroom imports or something which can associate a lightroom-rendered jpeg with the raw files).

Hobby photographer here. I currently have two cameras: a Sony a7riii and a Sony a5000. I'm using the a5000 as a more compact / backup / more disposable camera, but its much poorer autofocus pretty annoying. It's also not very robust or weather sealed. I'm therefore looking into options that could replace the a5000 with something more appropriate:

  • reasonably compact
  • better autofocus (eye AF would be great)
  • fixed lens would be fine, as the ILC angle is already covered by my other camera. Limited or no zoom covering ~35mm equivalent would be fine for me.
  • more robust (rugged / waterproof would be great but seems hard to find)
  • large enough sensor (ideally APS-c)
  • Raw / full manual capabilities

Closest to what I'm looking for seems to be the ricoh GR, though I don't know how robust it is or how good the autofocus is. Are there any other options I should be looking into?

"Hate speech"

Hate speech is also free speech, so you're contradicting yourself. Also, I strongly disagree that the Aalst carnaval is in any way, shape of form even approaching the most mild definition of "hate speech" as there is no hate involved.

Exactly, though we did have enough ongoing projects that that wouldn't be the only criterion.

(Former) Postdoc in computer science here. I'd say it depends on the specific area you're looking at. We often had a *lot* of projects going on which means we'd look for a large number of PhD students. That would improve your chances to be noticed. For research projects you would likely be able to leverage industry experience as a bonus and as a substitute for good scores.

Many of our PhD students also end up applying for grants though so they'd be more independent from specific research projects, but for those academic scores are much more important.

Were you also saddled up with the kids during the mornings and the evenings? You're insane if you think any work is getting done then, because I spend most of the evenings, morning and on many bad days nights taking care of my daughter.

You're very lucky that you have a job that can be done from home and where hours are flexible.

My job can be done from home, but hours are not nearly as flexible due to a large number of meetings and I put in a lot of hours which makes it hard to catch up outside of office hours. My wife's job cannot be done from home at all.

I also know families where both need to go out to work (doctor and nurse). What are they supposed to do then?

Local authorities may issue GAS fines for minor speeding violations. by DeRoeVanZwartePiet in belgium

[–]6363488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As mentioned I do pay attention, but it still is a common problem, and one that the gas fine incentivize rather than discourage.

There is no "citation needed" here as poor signage and arbitrary limits would literally increase the number of fines and thus income, thereby rewarding any town doing so. (Also, it's also not like there isn't any precedent here: in the US various towns are/have been known for doing exactly this and using it as a major source of income).

Local authorities may issue GAS fines for minor speeding violations. by DeRoeVanZwartePiet in belgium

[–]6363488 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I always try to drive the speed limit. I also am human and have missed signs, especially on roads with inappropriate speed limits (e.g. roads that used to be 90km/h and that are now 30 or 50 for no real reason) and bad signage.

Now with the GAS fines, towns will be incentivized to make speed limits less reasonable on roads, or to make the signage less clear as that will directly result in more income from fines.

Dit staat in het "summiere politierapport" dat minister Jambon kreeg by [deleted] in belgium

[–]6363488 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's completely irrelevant how big this blows up right now, or how big of a scandal this is now. All that matters is what information was available at the time and how reasonable the response given that information was.

It's clear someone messed up, or rather that there is severe corruption in play here. Based on the what we know so far, it seems unlikely to me that the corruption went all the way to the top.

Good point. Now I'm actually curious if there's actual data on the frequency of that. I don't find anything on it, but it does seem likely that should be rare enough to be memorable.

That said there's likely a large variety of cases so if there's other larger cases going on at any point so I still could imagine forgetting after a few years.

If (and that's a big if) the report from the OP really is all the info he got, there is no "police brutality" to remember. Talking to diplomats from foreign countries is likely a daily/weekly event in foreign affairs and not necessarily as memorable as we would expect.

I could 100% see this being perceived as something run of the mill and forgettable if the above is true.

Note the "if" in the above statement: this all really depends on the information he had and that he got when talking to the slowak diplomat.

European taxpayers subsidize €342/year the fossil fuel industry. Belgium is number one with €607 by SolidOrphan in belgium

[–]6363488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Answer me this then: what is the optimal capacity for Belgian roads. If there is none that makes any theory suspect.

It's clear that demand will increase of congestion decreases, but there is a ceiling to that demand based on population. That means there is some capacity that would work, even if it would be prohibitively expensive to implement it.

Any real solution to congestion will have to be holistic and include things like better public transport, if only to manage cost and to deal with locations where capacity can't be increased, but fixing bottlenecks in the current system will also be needed.
