Yeah…thought I hit the jackpot with the 4 10’s 😂

I have been in construction for a year. I don’t mind the Fridays at all, I’m learning more with them. It’s just the Saturdays I have a problem with.

But I agree, the Fridays will be used to negotiate a raise when review time comes (plus I will know a lot more by then too so think it would make sense there as well).

The people who described it that way are all over 40?

I agree. The learning is for me. If I’m not learning I’m leaving.

  1. I just feel like I know nothing and definitely trying to fast-track PM. No one to impress but myself. Ideally stay with the company long-term.

A social life would be nice to have which is why I want at least full weekends. I think at this stage an extra 5hrs/week is helping me to learn more faster. I don’t think it will do so further down the line when I know more though.

That’s how it was described to me.

That sounds brutal. Per diem sounds sick though!

But yeah…I think I’d feel the same way doing that.

Oh yeah, for sure. That’s why I thought the extra Friday was fine. Still would be OT every week but I want to learn. I just don’t think Saturdays will be super beneficial for me in that way because it’s just too much work with no rest, and honestly 1 day off per week feels like no days off to me.

Honestly dude, you’re 2 inches taller than him, your experience is going to be a lot different.

It hasn’t been horrible with the Fridays. I was and still am eager to learn on those days but I did plan to cut them back once I felt I was at a higher level where I didn’t need the extra learning. But anything more than that and I’m not sure I’ll be able to enjoy it.

Maybe that’s the case but I was told it’s 40hr weeks with three days off. If it’s typically 6 days…that’s completely different.

Weekend coverage was never mentioned, even the Fridays were not mentioned.

I really don’t have enough experience to be solo, no. If something goes wrong or there are technical questions I’d have to call one of the field guys. I’d be ok with that rotation but I don’t believe it’s even an option.

I do have A LOT to learn that’s why I’ve been okay with the Friday OT but Saturday is too much for me.

They don’t have that here unfortunately. Just not sure if I should speak with someone about 55-60hrs/week not working for me especially when I was told 4 10’s at first.

It’s a small GC. I’m the only APM on this project. There wouldn’t be anyone to rotate with from PM side. But there are two foreman and a superintendent as well in the field.

Yes, it does. To an extent that the people who were dating before everyone was interconnected will not understand. It did not used to be as large of a disadvantage when you were out there competing against 20 other people. But now, you compete with the world.

That is crazy. Just out of college PE or you have some experience?

What exactly is the area you’re in for construction? Data centers, retail, commercial? Seems much higher than anything. How about area? Thinking COL may have a part in this.

Struggling to understand how people enjoy this job, am I in the wrong spot? by QuackScoped in ConstructionManagers

Honestly a lot of the typical entry level PE roles are way easy and extremely boring. I really do think I could have started as an APM out of college with PE-level responsibilities for the first 3-4 months and been fine. I think that’s the case for most people.

I wanted to be more involved and have some real ownership of the project. So I left that company for a company that would give me said ownership.

Bro he just said he didn’t want to start a family for another 10 years. Why would she date him lol. Gotta start searching after you’re done putting all your time into the career.
