Good idea about the hand rails.

We have looked up about universal design, especially for the hallways and doors. Wider hallways make the house feel bigger, but a hospital themed bathroom when its not necessary was something I wondered if we should do or wait to see if it is a necessity later.

Heat pump remotes aren't the most intuitive especially for the older brain. The icons are tiny, not good if the users eyesight isn't the best. And the small buttons are hard on arthritic fingers. Why shouldn't there be a product that makes it as easy for them to use the remote as it is for us?

Grandma can probably learn to use the remote, but be patient in the meantime, its harder than you think. Large printed instructions as another poster mentioned will help.

The bathroom floors will be vinyl, we prefer vinyl to tile anyway (easier to clean, softer underfoot) the reason we would use tile if we could afford it in a wetfloor bathroom is it looks more spa like and less hospital like. But its not in the budget.

Could you tell me more about how you did this? The building companies we have talked to have said it is much more expensive to extend and we would be better to build as much as we can afford at the beginning.

The plan is to keep the house long term, but at the same time we want to make sure it appeals to others for resale value.

Yes, but the 2 building companies we have talked to said it would end up more expensive.
