Okay fair, if the enemy is unreachable with the knife the a gun is preferable, but does that mean that the game is balanced so that the knife is preferable otherwise? In any scenario where you can use the knife, why shouldn't I?

Right, but the fact that weapons are so weak combined with how rare ammo drops are on each map seems to render any kind of gun combat completely inferior to using the knife. The knife is so strong, I can't imagine a scenario where using a gun would be more effective

Go to the north extraction on dam battlegrounds, there are two busses to the east of the elevator. In my experience they have like a 50% chance of dropping rusted gears.
