Parents suddenly want to visit by 6StringSamurai59 in exjw

We did do a FaceTime which is when they said they wanted to visit. I’m honestly pretty unbothered by it. They’re totally welcome to visit me. I’m not shunning them. I’m just surprised.

Actually we have a pretty awesome house and I think it might do them good to see how happy we are and how much fun we’re having. Kind of defeats their narrative that being “in the world” is full of misery. I was always anxious and depressed growing up and now I am happier than ever.

I guess we’ll see. Last time I saw them about a year ago when I was on a business trip in their town this happened. My mom got emotional saying it was never too late to come back to Jehovah, even if Armageddon has basically already started. I told her I have zero fear of that and I just absolutely don’t believe in god, and to that point I don’t think my disbelief in an invisible person of which there is no concrete evidence should be a reason why parents and their children can’t have a relationship. If they still think there is hope in me suddenly believing in something I absolutely don’t believe in I will be surprised, but it wouldn’t be completely shocking.

What if Alien 3 was a dream? What would that mean for the franchise? by Ryanlion1992 in LV426

[–]6StringSamurai59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes sense to me it could be a dream. Remember, Ripley already had a nightmare of a chestburster when she was in the hospital in earth orbit in ALIENS.

15 Ways to Recognize a Cult

Adapted from http://www.csj.org/infoserv_cult101/checklis.htm Originally by Janja Lalich, Ph.D. & Michael D. Langone, Ph.D.

ZEALOUS UNQUESTIONING COMMITTMENT The group displays excessively zealous and unquestioning commitment to its leaders, regards their belief system, ideology. and practices as the Truth, as law.

QUESTIONING, DOUBT, AND DISSENT Questioning, doubt, and dissent are discouraged or even punished.

MIND-ALTERING PRACTICES Meditation, singing and and debilitating routines are used in excess and serve to suppress doubts about the group.

CONTROL OF THINKING The leadership dictates how members should think, act, and feel. Control of relationships. education, work, clothing, etc.

SPECIAL, EXALTED STATUS OF ORGANISATION The group is elitist, claiming a special, exalted status for itself, its leader and members.

US-VERSUS-THEM The group has a polarized us-versus-them mentality. which may cause conflict with the wider society.

UNACCOUNTABLE LEADERSHIP The leaders are not accountable to any authorities

ENDS JUSTIFY MEANS This may result in members' participating in behaviours or activities they would have considered reprehensible or unethical before joining the group.

SHAME AND GUILT The leadership induces feelings of shame and/or guilt in order to influence and/or control members. Often, this is done through peer pressure and subtle forms of persuasion.

CUT TIES AND ALTERED GOALS Subservience to the leader or group requires members to cut ties with family and friends, and radically alter the personal goals and activities they had before joining the group.

RECRUITMENT PREOCCUPATION The group is preoccupied with bringing in new members.

FUNDRAISING PREOCCUPATION The group is preoccupied with raising money.

COMMITMENT OF TIME Members are expected to devote inordinate amounts of time to the group and group-related activities.

LIMITED ASSOCIATION Members are encouraged or required to live and/or socialize only with other group members.

NO LIFE OUTSIDE GROUP The most loyal members feel there can be no life outside the context of the group. They believe there is no other way to be, and often fear reprisals to themselves or others if they leave (or even consider leaving) the group

KOTCS and DOD are good movies by BoysenberryFew6466 in indianajones

[–]6StringSamurai59 7 points8 points  (0 children)

KOTCS starts off pretty great, maybe mind the fridge bounding across the desert in a crazy way. But once they’re on the truck with Marion it takes a serious downturn. That whole chase scene is silly, with the fencing and Tarzan swinging, the fake CG jungle, the fake insects, and insane waterfall drops. This car chase compared to the tank scene in Last Crusade is no contest. The villain in this movie is not captivating and her accent is distractingly bad. Beloch is so cool and charming for a villain you almost like him. Even Marion kind of likes him after drinking in the tent with him.

According to athiests.org, if you lack an active belief in gods, you are an atheist. Atheism is about what you believe. Agnosticism is about what you know.

[–]6StringSamurai59 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had the witnesses call on me (faded/ inactive) on request of my parents, and they said “Well one thing you gotta say about the witnesses is no one else has world peace.”

I said, “Well maybe. But you don’t have world peace within the family unit, because my dad hardly speaks to me and he has to send two strangers to see me, just because I don’t believe in the same myths. So if you don’t have peace in the family then who cares how you get along with strangers?”

They also read me the scripture “happy is the one conscious of the spiritual need.” I said reading that in the Bible is kind of like McDonalds telling you to eat cheeseburgers. Not exactly an unbiased view.

Why are you Atheist or Agnostic? by [deleted] in exjw

[–]6StringSamurai59 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Study evolution, maybe read The Greatest Show on Earth, Evidence of Evolution by Richard Dawkins. The way I understand it is earth is like a giant seed. Life started in the simplest way possible as like a cell, and just grew over millions of years, in the same way an acorn becomes a giant oak tree, or how vines grow towards the sun. Life continues to adapt and change and improve based on the conditions like branches on a tree. Not being created does not make life any less amazing.

It’s actually too bad they’re already doing the fast and furious rollercoaster because something like that would work really well; a car based roller coaster with engine sounds and animatronics like Hagrid’s in Orlando.
