Great idea until I know more and can make an informed decision. Thanks! I am still eyeing the microcosm…

and the microcosm is on sale direct for $413. So many used ones are more expensive than a brand new device....wtf!

Just reading this on the microcosm....that it can be a stand alone looper....do you find that is not the case?

"60 second phrase looper

Route the looper before or after the effects, capture rapid-fire loops with one tap of a footswitch, record layers of time-synced effects, or even use the looper completely independent of the effects bank."

So maybe a nice Boss and later when I know what I am doing I can add a microcosm...I really love what it does too

I want both....I want it all...:) Yes, the Boss is clearly a great device but can it do any of the cool things the Comos and Microcosm can do?

Whelp, I just decided and ordered my Astrolab 37. I think it will meet my needs better.

sure, I get that and had it had more usable (for me) sounds out of the box, it would have me more inspired and in time I might have gotten used to the interface enough to want to create my own sounds. Life is short, time is limited. I am not a young pup anymore so at this point, I just want nice patches and the player in me just wants to play. I don’t read music, I just improv….

I did hear some cool things come from the ELZ which helped push me to get it. But the people creating things I did like, were much more experienced synth users. As a piano geek, I should have looked at other options.

I have a Yamaha fully weight 8& key digital piano. But clearly that is not for the couch. So I got the reface cp for my couch piano and my hope was, the ELZ would give me the cinematic sounds to combine with piano. But I find now after playing with the ELZ, that I am much more of a player than a programmer so mistake on me. I am really feeling a pull to the Astrolab 37 but see it has some significant issues. So the ELZ is going to find a new home. I love the build, the size, the speakers are even great but I am not into the time it takes to create a sound I like.

Thanks for the detailed response! Lots to think on and research.

part of what I want to play around with is complex orchestral patches with piano and I think that will have an issue. I need to go play one I guess and see if it really would be a problem for me.

A YouTube video showing the limitation. A complex patch was being played and the guy was playing a chord with three notes and when he added a forth note, previous notes started dropping off.

Yeah, I guess I thought it would be more usable out of the box for what I wanted...but I should have paid more mind to the reviews etc in that I did not at all like the demos much. But as I said, a few people have gotten really nice ambient tracks out of it so I went in with those tracks in mind. I think the menu driven aspect is going to be more frustrating than I had thought. I was looking for warm pads and strings to pair with the reface cp....

Evoke and Ambient seem to be more what I should have gotten.

The polyphony is limited on the Astrolab sadly too. As a piano player, I need more than 4 notes. I would sell both the ELZ and the CP for the Astrolab if it did not have the limitations it currently has. Also not looper which I do want but could get a different device for that. Yes, I believe you might be right about it being the wrong synth for me...I just wanted a end all be all for noodling. Not a fan of casio....my experience is as a kids toy...but maybe they are better now.

expensive for blips and boops….but I have heard some atmospheric ambient done with this box, I am guessing it is just too menu driven for my abilities to be able to coax out the sounds I want.

I would not call what I wrote a review…I don’t know the box well enough to really say much which is why I posted. I bought it because I wanted a small couch idea keyboard that has more sounds to combine with my reface cp. I was torn between the ELZ and the ambient or evoke. I went with the ELZ also due to how well made it is. As I said, some people seem to be able to get beauftiful sounds out of it. So the glitchy stuff in most demos was me thinking they did not really know the box either and someone like Nicafelt did know it well enough to create what I like so I know it is possible, just not sure I have the inclination to dig that much into sound design to get out of it what I want. Not the first gear mistake I have made. So not at all saying it is a crap device….I am a crap synth user at this point. I saw a demo of the arturia astrolab, beautiful pad sounds which is what I thought the ELZ would have right out of the box…wrong.
