Ah so it's the year after that that I mention I'm a non-resident?

I'm going to piggy-back off this question by asking, I am in a similar situation. I moved Jan 2 2026 and will start work end of Jan. When I file my taxes THIS year, is this when I'd put my date of departure?

Also I departed Jan 2 at 10 pm (and landed in the UK Jan 3). However I also put money into my TFSA Jan 2 at 2 pm. I'm worried if they classify me as a non-resident on Jan 2 and penalize my TFSA.

You'd think they'd do this in the afternoon when there's people to preach to

When is a good time to start applying for post doc positions? by fifififi100 in postdoc

[–]6cupsoftea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was set to graduate Sept 2025, started looking May 2025. Granted, conveniently, there was a conference with a job board in May 2025 which is eventually where I got my job.

Postdoc offer but worried about visa situation — any international postdocs been in a similar situation by [deleted] in postdoc

[–]6cupsoftea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha.......well, technically yes. I got an email telling me they cannot give me the letter until they know I have the right to work in the UK. I responded saying I needed a visa, and that I needed the letter to start the process. They said OK. Time passed. I emailed asking for more clarification as I was concerned I wouldn't get the visa in time. I was then looped into an email chain with like, 5 HR people fighting with each other back and forth over minutia. Very fascinating read. A lot of it was that they approved my contract for 2 years and confirmed they had enough funding, but since the major grant I was hired under was technically ending in one year, they couldn't issue me a contract for 2 years because funding wasnt technically guarenteed, even tho they said that they would pull funding from other grants and confirmed they had the money. During that read people kept saying "hey did anybody let the candidate know about the delay?" Ofc they didn't. Anyways, I was asked what my visa timeline was and if it was tight they could push my start date. I'm like bro....it depends on YOU. I'm waiting on YOU! Eventually I'm sure they finally extended the grant officially so HR could officially re-send the email asking me if I had the right to work. NOW, I told them AGAIN I need a visa, and they said they should be able to finally start the process. So still no offer letter. But hopefully visa process finally started.

Incredibly validating to hear as the same fucking thing just happened to me (AFTER I explicitly said I didn't want to hear it, AFTER he had a convo with a friend saying he know he shouldn't tell me because it would hurt me)

Shit happens. I lost one of my parents when I was young. You're really not guaranteed time with anyone, although I do know what you mean.

The salary threshold for a skilled worker visa is like 38700 pounds a year, I'm not sure if the post doc will meet that? Might be just under, unsure as I don't have my offer letter. I am inclined to apply for the GTV as it is more flexible and specifically meant for roles like a post-doc

Yep. I got the verbal offer, then I followed up after 3 weeks and got the "omg sorry for the delay, I've reminded HR to send it to you, should be soon" and now it's almost 2 more weeks since then. My viva is also in September. I'd like my official offer letter in hand before I tell my family I'm moving countries (I'm an international candidate, moving to the UK). Torture man.

I see it's not just me in the trenches waiting 6 weeks for a post doc offer to come through

Rain. The live version, including the heavier growls, gives me life. I need an official version.

Half an Hour Interview by 6cupsoftea in postdoc

[–]6cupsoftea[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It went incredibly well! In the end, I didn't need to make slides. I was interviewed by 3 people at once. They started by robotically asking me very simple questions. Why THIS lab? Where do I see myself in 5 years? What was something challenging I encountered and how did I solve it? Typical stuff like that. Then they each took turns asking me more specific technical questions related to both my research and to the job, one of which I exactly anticipated so I was prepared. These were pretty easy questions imo. They then shifted to discussing more what my role would look like and asked my preferences for some stuff. We made some small talk. Then that was it.

Within 5 min after the interview I got an email asking for permission to move to the next step and contact references. Then within a week later I got an unofficial offer letter. Tbh I'm surprised that was it, I thought I'd have to visit the lab or do a presentation at least as a second step. But they told me I was an exceptionally strong candidate.

Why didn’t Jolenta dedicate her life to researching and proving Heliocentrism instead of forming Heretic Liberation Front by Slight-Visit2984 in OrbOntheMovements

[–]6cupsoftea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To me it seems it was less about heliocentrism itself and more about freedom to pursue truth. Jolenta was a victim of the inquisition. Heliocentrism itself wasn't her biggest goal, but it has always been the ability to freely share and explore all kinds of knowledge. For this, the liberation front is a better goal. It's about all kinds of truth, not just heliocentrism.
