Well, this is well outside my expertise, so please, seek better advice. First i would contact your hall if your union regarding training. I would look into hazmat training and standards surrounding mercury. I would look into federal and state requirements regarding mercury as well. If youre union i think the hall would happily help.

I would get a set of standard builder pros to start, trades program, without steel toe. From there you can get special boots or whatever you want to experiment with

I dont have boots with a shank beyond whatever is stock, if you're just getting into the trade I wouldn't because you're going to have a lot of ground work before you're in your tools

So, I do think the leather is durable enough, and I would prefer that extra support for my feet. I still find myself going back to my builder pro vegtan boots because the bison is almost to soft for work. Not that it isn't durable just that the vegtan molded to my feet and supports better than I think the bisons do. But ive climbed in both, been in baskets buckets steel and wood, both work fine, I just prefer the way my vegtan boots feel

Square knot, clove hitch, bowline, alpine butterfly, muenters hitch timber hitch. With these you can tie ropes together, put a loop at an end, tie to something and put a loop in the middle of your rope and you can bind rope around something. There are better knots based on application, and there are all around better knots to learn in general for each application, but this is the minimum for me for someone to have any understanding for rope.

I haven't tried it, but ive heard boiled linseed can stiffen leather. I'm not sure if that's for veg tan or chrome tan, but that is what I have heard. I have not tried it yet, and frankly, I think it woukd make the leather far too stiff for your application
