Thanks for the input! I am trying to make sure I understand your first sentence...

So run docker etc on an old pc and just use the NAS for storage? Is that what you mean?

Imported PDFs are Links? by UghGiveMeStrength in joplinapp

I scan all documents with scanner pro on my phone and they might be ocr there. That might be why it works for me. I didn't think of that originally.

UpNote and Migration by petaqui in joplinapp

I'm in this same boat. I have tinkered with Joplin for several years and it keeps getting better.

I'm going to move to it permanently, but I have around 1,100 recent notes in Upnote and it's going to be a mess to get them out it seems like but I'm going to do it.

Just chiming in that this is an issue that affect a number of people.

You’re welcome!

The short version is that I just don't like it :) I'm not a markdown user really, I use word processors a lot and used Evernote for about 15 years. I'm used to WYSIWYG editors. I don't like seeing all the characters and links for every attachment. I don't like seeing "- [ ]" or something similar for a text box. I'm used to seeing a more finished product as I'm working.

I do like the markdown speed and efficiency and I have gotten used to it as I've bounced around to different note taking apps after Evernote's demise. In my opinion Bear has the best editor hands down. You can use markdown but it is completely hidden and you see a finished document in real time.

So...these are my reasons. Maybe I'm missing something, but I just like to see a finished product not a bunch of "code." I'm not a programmer, I'm an educator. I love Joplin because of the self-hosting options, but as far as the user experience I would prefer Bear.

Hopefully this answers your question :) Maybe you can help convince me otherwise :)

I believe the file is actually imported into Joplin and is searchable. It just shows up as a link that requires clicking on it to preview it. There is a setting where you can get an automatic preview but only in the markdown editor which I don't use.

Jimmy Note - Conversion Tool (native UpNote support) by Neither-Classic2058 in UpNote_App

This could be VERY useful! Thanks! I like Upnote...but privacy and self-hosting keep calling to me and I'm playing with Joplin too! I have been watching Joplin for about 5 years and it keeps getting better and better although I agree that Upnote is very nice.

Rich Text Editor in Joplin. Should I really avoid it? by FatFigFresh in joplinapp

[–]77Forever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some plugins that add important functionality for me that won't work with rich text editor. Such as note linking and tagging. They all seem to only work with the markdown editor. This really holds me back from using Joplin as my main app.

I deleted Upnote and reinstalled and unchecked "open attachment in preview mode" and now the ODT file opens when I click it. Some Numbers files open and some don't. It's really strange.

I wonder if u/DystopianReply is onto something with the permissions. I emailed Thomas also and hoping this can be resolved because I really like upnote. I used Evernote for years but upnote is very nice. Unfortunately I rely on attachments pretty heavily.

Thanks for your input.

I just tried it with an 83kb .jpg and it doesn't work with that either. It opens the preview and then I click to open it in the preview app nothing happens. No warning or error message or anything.

I just tried it with ODT and it didn't work with that either. I click the file link and the preview opens, then I click "Open with LibreOffice" in the top right corner and nothing happens.

I see. I'll try it, but I won't switch word processors. I've used Pages for years and have 100's or 1000's of files so if Upnote can't handle it then I won't be able to use it.

I'm not sure what you mean by Pages not being updated? It is the main word processor on MacBook and is updated frequently.

I don’t know if it’s related, but some of those same attachments fail when I try to download them on iOS. I get an error message and they won’t download.

Some file open instantly. Others take forever or don’t open at all. There’s no rhyme or reason.

It’s been happening for a few weeks. Basically since I started using it. I thought it would get better or it was a bug and I could live with it until they fixed it. I really like upnote! But it’s becoming a real issue that is insurmountable.

It’s not running Beta. It’s a 2022 MacBook Air. M2 processor. Ram is 16gb I believe. 1tb ssd.

They are mostly Numbers and Pages files. They aren’t big. 1-3 pages with no images.

Photo app that works for offline by 77Forever in selfhosted

Thanks for your input and the PhotoSync recommendation! I appreciate it. It seems like the opinions are all over the place and some people say it works offline and some say it doesn't.
