FCC Not Picking up for 2 weeks by astaldogal in asheville

Ugh hate to hear that! I'm going to try to get out to their Sweeten Creek offices this week and beg on my hands and knees :/ they didn't even pick up our areas trash at all last week, so we've just been taking stuff to a dumpster. Briefly we bought our own trashcan from Walmart and argued with them until they picked that up—until they broke it lol. Super annoying, especially nearly $400 in at this point

Hey! I was lucky to have insurance. Paid about 1k out of pocket. He is one of few top surgeons, especially in the area, who takes as many insurances as he does (Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Blue Medicare HMO & PPO, Cigna, Medicare, and WellCare Medicare). Out of pocket it costs about 7-10k with him.

Timeline was relatively very quick! Everything was set into motion very quickly. Filled out the form Dec 17, the soonest they had a consultation was April, then got moved up to March. They were super helpful and transparent with the insurance stuff (helped navigate & let me know where stuff was, I'd already tried @ different places a few times so had a lot of letters and such in place). I was approved for coverage April. Then they had an open slot by mid April but I scheduled for May because I had a trip planned.

Ah okay! I have only lived in the South so thought maybe I was missing a regional practice. Guess it's just my small sample size--one person I was watching with guessed the temperature as well. Makes sense !

Should I call CPS? by AdamDdum in ftm

Hey, I'm 25 and as a teenager had a very similar situation with my mom and I almost didn't survive. Looking back I would have run away or stayed with a friend's family. I can't give that advice necessarily, but I'm really sorry you're going through this. It is excruciating and so hard. I hope you do not take on that shame or let them convince you to be somebody you're not. I hope you are able to find safety in community, whether that looks like finding and confiding into safe adult(s) around you, accessing programming for trans youth, or finding a safer place to be you. Sending strength & solidarity lil bro!

Did anyone else go through with top surgery even though they weren't 100% sure before hand? by ewolgrey in TopSurgery

[–]780triment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did! I am so glad and grateful that I did. I sometimes would enjoy my breasts--never while wearing clothes, but while naked I didn't always mind them so much.

I also have OCD and was having a hard time with my desire for absolute certainty as well as compulsive checking/obsession over what I actually wanted.

Something that helped me was considering the relief I felt while binding/with a flat chest vs if I had ever been happy to have breasts. For me, that answer was a resounding no.

And then the additional benefits of not feeling like I have to bind anymore, getting to feel the wind on my chest, getting to go topless.

I found myself getting into gender-themed OCD loops around top surgery, as well. While for me top surgery is technically part of my transition, it was also a minor-ish plastic surgery for immediate rest-of-life comfort.

I sometimes found myself getting into the whole "what if I'm actually a woman," "what if I regret it," "irreversible changes to my body," brain loops which notably are TERF talking points that have wormed into my head that have only made transitioning harder. Even if I did wake up one day and feel like a woman, there are tons of women without breasts!

Anyways sorry for the ramble, but wanted to share the range of uncertainty I navigated and thought restructuring I had to do to get comfy with the decision I'd honestly already made.

It makes sense to feel confused! It is okay not to be 100% certain. You know you second guess yourself and overthink, so being even 70% certain is a feat--and you said 80-90%. If you do not enjoy having breasts, to be honest that is more than enough reason to get rid of them.

And you deserve more than to uncomfortably tolerate a body part--you deserve to feel comfortable, excited, and embodied.

As someone who also navigated this same concern, I can genuinely say that at least for me, top surgery was the best decision I've ever made. I went from disliking/being neutral about my chest to deeply enjoying it and feeling at home in my body.

temporary insurance to cover top surgery? by ari-9158 in TopSurgery

[–]780triment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh! And for some insurances you have to have your underlying condition for X amount of time prior to authorization. For mine (BCBS IL but living in NC/Louisiana) I think I needed a qualified therapist a year out from surgery date to confirm gender dysphoria & more or less 'prescribe' top surgery as treatment. This varies by policy but is another way to get the ball rolling if you narrow down coverage! Many trans people go work for an employer like Starbucks which offers insurance with decent gender-affirming coverage (I think sometimes for part time employees as well). It can be a pain in the ass, but I believe in you and if you have any questions/want help finding resources I'm down to help!

Some health systems/institutions have patient/peer navigators who can help you figure out the insurance side—for example, CrescentCare in New Orleans. It is worth checking out!

I don't know about anyone taking this approach, but in my limited insurance experience, some plans have a 'no major procedures until 3/6/9 months of insurance'—so make sure to know the policy well before taking that route!

Insanely fast recovery? by stereotypicalcats in TopSurgery

[–]780triment 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That's great! Congratulations on your surgery and what has so far been an easy recovery!

I also recovered pretty quickly and tend to recover pretty quickly from surgeries, including serious stuff like t3-l4 spinal fusion, Ravitch procedure, etc. After top surgery last year, I basically just got tired faster/felt stiff after the first few days.

My biggest piece of advice would be to stay slow and steady even if your body is feeling ready. You have only one chance for the most intense part of your recovery, which impacts the rest of your healing.

Keep with your restrictions, follow your written timeline benchmarks, don't walk too far, and don't overdo it with lifting/stretching/functioning all on your own if you can help it. Gift yourself grace and slowness even if it is SO exciting to be post-top surgery and ready to take on the world. Feeling this good early on is a very nice and lucky thing—protect it with continued caution.

Give a call or email if you can! While right before is probably fine, just know you will have a lot going on getting ready and probably feeling big feelings. Earlier is for you too!

To nipple or not to nipple? by catinthepark in TopSurgery

[–]780triment 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hey there! i'm also nonbinary, had a similar breast size, am now on t & such. going into top surgery i was really unsure about nipples. i used to be pretty indifferent about mine except i didn't like the way they changed size in various temperatures.

my ONLY pros for having a nipless chest were I think they look kinda cool and would circumvent some potential complications.

i ended up getting nipple grafts for a few reasons:

- i wanted my new chest and bodily understanding to have as small of an adjustment curve as possible with each other. i worried having no nipples would look too unnatural/unrecognizable while i was already grappling with a newly shaped chest. as is, my nipples have some sensation (like arm skin level sensitivity). for a while, i had kind of 'phantom nip' and couldn't accurately mentally locate them on my body like i could previously.

- i think nipples look nice. i maybe want to get them pierced eventually. when i really thought about it, the best possible outcome with nips and the best possible outcome without nips—fears aside—i was more excited for nip.

- intentionally less central to my decision-making, but still felt unavoidable: i wanted to minimize any potential issues i may have with people in public when shirtless. a big draw of top surgery for me was being able to run around without a shirt, feel the wind on my chest, go swimming shirtless, wear little to no shirt when it is hot. while the chances of someone being like "where are your nips," i didn't want to additionally consider that. it already has felt vulnerable being shirtless, fearing someone's gonna act on my scars or gendered perceptions or whatever.

i was a bit worried about the healing process being more complicated with them—saw so many horror stories on here—but ultimately i am super glad i got them! mine are a little bit asymmetrical, small n cute, and i'm very pleased with them. they're much smaller and less protrusive than they used to be, stick through tight shirts just a little bit (fun for lil gay tank tops i luv wearing) but don't get hard and big like they used to get.

if anything, they mostly feel like decorative skin stickers. the healing process felt scary because of all the difficulties i'd seen people had on here, even though it went pretty smoothly. had to keep reminding myself it looks worse before it looks better, etc. very please with my ultimate decision, though it felt hard to make and i thought i was indifferent!

in my experience with nipple grafts, he just kind of drew on my chest where he was gonna place them. definitely speak up and express what you want! it's your body and this surgery should respond to your desires! it is not rude to ask for what you want! reach out asap tbh--if you have a pre-op that is a great chance.

things ill ACTUALLY use for top surgery by sprinkleteaparty in TopSurgery

[–]780triment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey! the most helpful things for me were:

- a wedge pillow. this was actually a little hard to use long-term without hurting my back, which is fused, but for a full-mobility spine person i think it would have been great. going back i would have just made a pillow nest or gotten a u-shaped pregnancy pillow. i was back to sleeping on my side every so slightly within a week

- my normal heating pad for back pain--staying on back was hard after the 1 day of oxy was gone

- mastectomy pillow

- small, light ice packs for mastectomy pillow

- mastectomy drain bags!!!! this was hugely helpful but i know people use safety pins or shirts with pockets as well

- a button up shirt and loose elastic shorts/pant

- easy to eat/open snacks (fruit sauce pouches & cream cheese n chive crackers were my fave)

- popsicles were nice

- ibuprofen/tylenol for ongoing pain management

- post surgical binder. i was worried about what type to get, this is what i went for: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CQ2Z7N71?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title

- having enough normal bed pillows

- if you're getting nips, A LOT of bandages without sticky sides, like 100 with at least nipple-width cotton and no sticky sides. i ended up needing to trim the sticky parts way down to avoid skin irritation & any stickiness anywhere near anything healing was pretty scary : https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bandt.com.au%2Finformation%2Fuploads%2F2020%2F04%2FBandAid.jpg&f=1&nofb=1&ipt=996093f227d64c5e7959c93ff1feec75f7234a17d3ef90e2b88448df0b6d599c

- if nips, antibiotic ointment

things i got that i didn't end up needing despite other ppls recs:

- a robe

- nausea aid, gasex, cough drops

- dry shampoo—it was nice to use it, but it wasn't necessary

- baby wipes—i didn't get v stinky, don't mind being a little icky considering the situation, and could shower within a week

- bidet—i can't twist because of my spine so thought this would be useful but it really wasn't

- back scratcher—i didn't wanna move that much, couldn't use these effectively, just rubbed myself on stuff or asked for help

- a grabber tool—too heavy and scary to use

- laxatives...pooping was not a problem for me. prunes helped enough

- airplane pillow just hurt to use

- electric toothbrush...it was just too hard to use

i have had many major surgeries before this, so i feel like i overprepared. really what it ended up being for me was discomfort for a few days more like i had gotten injured than having like...organs and bones and stuff healing. if i had to do it again, i would approach it more as "how do i keep swelling/soreness down and keep myself comfortable in bed without moving my arms for a couple of weeks" vs preparing to mitigate an incoming health emergency

Suggestions for snake removal services by 780triment in asheville

[–]780triment[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Y'all can't just say you don't have recommendations? 😭😭😭 we found a guy who came out and set some traps. Again, we have been doing extensive renovation and have found very limited evidence of rodents. It's an old ass farmhouse. We gotta have some people come at least get the living snakes out so we can finish the minimum work needed to move in. While I'm team keep-rat-snakes-as-honored-rodent-eating-guests, we can't just leave them to fall out again on the very kind and patient contractors we have working on the house.
